Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In 1935, this WATER TOWER was erected at the then edge of the city, commissioned by the State Office for Drinking Water Supply in The Hague, in the austere forms of the Late Amsterdam School. The designer was probably Kording. The single-storey extensions at the base of the water tower are of later date and fall outside the protection afforded by the state. The water tower is no longer in use as such. Ground-floor retail space is now established there. The upper storeys stand empty. Since 1985 the water tower has been owned by a Turkish mosque association which operates a mosque in the extensions.
Description
The partially detached, 48.0 metre high water tower is built on a circular foundation. The shaft of the five-storey tower has a reinforced concrete skeleton sheathed and filled with machine-made brick. The tower has a round elevated double concrete reservoir with a flat bottom. The round arched entrance with a wooden clamp door is accessible via a small stone staircase. On either side of the entrance is a cast stone decoration inscribed: ANNO 1935. The exterior has been given some vertical decorative emphasis through the application of large brick pilasters at the location of the concrete skeleton and through the narrow, tall windows set in steel frames. The narrow intermediate storey with leakage floor beneath the reservoir has four low narrow window openings per bay. Light access beside the reservoir is provided per bay by a tall, narrow window with glass bricks. The round spire with shallow pitch is covered with green weathered copper plates. The hexagonal concrete standpipe is centrally placed in the building. Internally the space is consistently maintained as hexagonal with concrete pillars and roof trusses at the corners. The trusses meet each other at the standpipe. The spaces between these corner pillars are filled with large, relatively coarse machine-made brick. With the exception of the wooden floor of the first storey, the storey floors are of concrete. Each storey is provided with an iron access ladder. Between the reservoir and the cladding a concrete staircase has been installed. In the space between reservoir and leakage floor the original piping and connections remain.
