Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In 1894, on the orders of the Oss pastor-dean A. van der Laar (1826-1899), on the south side of the already state-protected Grote, or Maria Onbevlekte Ontvangeniskerk (Immaculate Conception Church) (Kerkstraat 15, monument number: 31870), a monument group (MEMORIAL/STATUE) consisting of three free-standing sculptures in Savonnières stone (a French limestone) placed on high sandstone bases was erected, depicting a triumphant Mary between two angels. The designer of the sculptures was L.C. Hezenmans (1841-1909) from 's-Hertogenbosch, the maker J.F. de Vriendt from Antwerp. The sculpture group was erected in commemoration of the end of a wave of criminality in Oss, culminating in the murder of the Royal Marechaussee sergeant Gerard Hoekman in 1893. The style of the sculptures is neo-gothic.
Description
On the south side of the nave of the Grote, or Maria Onbevlekte Ontvangeniskerk, there is an entirely free-standing group of three sculptures (a triumphant Mary flanked by two angels) which are interconnected by a low wrought-iron railing. The three 2-metre-high, square, sandstone bases are placed on a foundation of mortared brickwork. The bases of the angel sculptures, with chamfered corners, have pointed-arch recesses on all sides with moulded trefoil arches within them. Inscriptions are set into the recesses facing the street. Left: In remembrance of the fateful year 1893. Base of Mary sculpture: I am the Immaculate Conception. I am the Guardian of this place (Lourdes 1894). Base on the right: In thanksgiving for the happy outcome in 1894. The base of the Mary sculpture is wider and also more extensively ornamented than those of the angel sculptures. Thus, the base of the Mary sculpture has small columns with Corinthian capitals at the corners, and the recesses are also made more complex with a partly pointed-arch quatrefoil with square. The sculpture group is a neo-gothic variant on the style of thirteenth-century French High Gothic; the sculptures have the characteristic S-form and V-shaped folds. The standing angels each have a triangular escutcheon with an inscription that has mostly become illegible. Left: O precious Mother, bless this place. Right: That from henceforth forever belongs to you. On the outer side of each of the angel sculptures the signature and the date 1894 are inscribed. The height of both angels is 1.80 metres, that of Mary 2.10 metres. The Mary sculpture is made of a softer stone than both angels and is therefore more weathered. Mary with folded hands is depicted in prayer, standing on a globe with crescent moon and serpent with apple in its mouth. The Mary sculpture is severely weathered. Between the sculpture bases is a two-part wrought-iron decorative railing with twisted bars and rosettes. Until circa 1990 the sculpture group was placed amongst planting on both the front and rear sides. This has since been removed.
Valuation
The sculpture group has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of socio-economic and spiritual developments, in particular as a memorial of the end of the wave of criminality in Oss at the end of the 19th century. The sculpture group is of particular importance in the work of architect/artist L.C. Hezenmans. The sculpture group is of particular importance because of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design. The sculpture group is of particular importance because of the historically spatial relationship with the Grote, or Maria Onbevlekte Ontvangeniskerk which is already listed on the national register of protected monuments. The sculpture group is of particular importance because of its typological and functional rarity.
