Inleiding

Introduction

Partially detached corner building, built around 1890 as a CITY VILLA for manufacturer Simon van den Bergh (1826-1907) in chalet-style forms. After 1896 it was used among other things as a doctor's residence. The villa is located on the west side of the Molenstraat and has a strong architectural and socio-economic relationship with numbers 61 and 65. A general practitioner's surgery is currently located at the rear of the building. On the site where the very spacious rear garden formerly stood, new construction was realised shortly after 1990.

Description

Partially detached, strongly frontally oriented corner building on a roughly rectangular ground plan. The building has two storeys with an attic storey, is constructed of machine-made brick and has walls in ashlar brickwork, ornamented on the front with among others stretcher courses. The front facade, numbering five bays, is constructed in red facing brick and has glazed moulded stones. The building is set back in relation to the Molenstraat and has a densely planted garden at the front, surrounded by an iron ornamental railing. The most striking aspects of the building are the two gabled roofs perpendicular to the Molenstraat with carried-through gutter moulding and large overhang. The roof consists of two rectangular sections, both have a flat roof with shields covered with interlocking tiles. The front section is somewhat higher than the rear and has at the front two rectangular roof abutments under a gabled roof. Square dormer windows with bottom-hung sashes have been placed in the roof shields. The building still has the original straight-closed windows with T-windows. Above each window is a pressed arch with brick mosaic and a diamond head as keystone. The ornamentation in the front facade is further provided by the wrought iron ornamental anchors and the wooden supporting construction of the overhanging abutments. The supporting construction consists among others of worked timber posts, corbels and a semicircular arch. The abutments are each crowned with an elegant iron weather vane. The double front door is accessible via a low flight of stairs with natural stone treads. The side and rear facades of the building are considerably more soberly treated than the front facade. The southern side facade was originally hidden from view by tall trees. The decoration is sober with string courses, large pilasters, iron wall anchors and a dentil course under the gutter. In the southern roof shield are two mortared chimneys. The extension at the rear serves mainly as practice space and falls outside the protection granted by national government. Internally the house proves to be constructed as a double dwelling; the central corridor divides the building into two sections. Although the original layout has largely been maintained, internally apart from a few etched door panes almost all decorative elements have disappeared. The building has a double basement.

The villa in its capacity as a manufacturer villa is of general cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of a socio-economic development. The villa has architectural-historical importance by virtue of the particular use of materials and the ornamentation. The villa is of general importance by virtue of the architectural and socio-economic relationship with numbers 61 and 65. The villa has importance by virtue of the architectural integrity of the exterior.
