Inleiding
Dit halfvrijstaande, sober vormgegeven DUBBEL-WOONHUIS dateert uit omstreeks 1870 en heeft waarschijnlijk een oudere kern. Het is door een smalle drupsteeg van nummer 28 gescheiden. Rond 1915 zijn wijzigingen in de noordelijke zijgevel aangebracht. De voorgevel van nummer 26 is voorzien van steekankers. Het is gelegen aan één van de twee voormalige hoofdstraten in de oude kom van Megen, binnen het van rijkswege beschermde stadsgezicht.
Omschrijving
Het eenlaags pand onder lijstgevel heeft een L-vormige plattegrond, doordat achter nummer 26 een oorspronkelijke achteraanbouw ligt. Op het samengestelde schilddak liggen oud-Hollandse pannen. De handvorm bakstenen voorgevel, voorzien van een gecementeerde plint, een gestuct fries en een geprofileerde gootlijst, telt per huis drie vensterassen. De voordeur, een paneeldeur met bovenlicht, is bij beide huizen in de meest zuidelijke as geplaatst. Elk huis heeft twee zesruits schuifvensters, voorzien van hardstenen dorpels. Het bovenlicht van de deuren is in beide gevallen gesierd met een levensboom. Die van nummer 24 is origineel. De deur is daar tevens voorzien van een gietijzeren rooster. De noordelijke zijgevel is eveneens opgetrokken uit handvorm baksteen, heeft sporen van verbouwingen en is voorzien van een vier- en zesruits schuifvenster en, aan de straatzijde, een halfvenster. Voor het pand ligt een bakstenen stoep, op de hoeken voorzien van smeedijzeren krulhekken.
Waardering
De woonhuizen zijn van algemeen belang. Ze hebben cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeelden van de sociaal-historische geschiedenis en als voorbeelden van de typologische ontwikkeling van het uiterst eenvoudige stadswoonhuis voor arbeiders of kleine middenstand. Ze hebben architectuurhistorische waarde als goed bewaard gebleven representanten van het kleine stadswoonhuis. This semi-detached, soberly designed DOUBLE DWELLING dates from around 1870 and probably has an older core. It is separated from number 28 by a narrow drip passage. Around 1915 alterations were made to the northern side gable. The front facade of number 26 is provided with brick nogging. It is located on one of the two former main streets in the old centre of Megen, within the nationally protected townscape.
Description
The single-storey building with cornice-topped facade has an L-shaped floor plan, because behind number 26 there is an original rear extension. Old Dutch tiles lie on the compound hipped roof. The handmade brick front facade, provided with a cemented plinth, a stuccoed frieze and a moulded drip moulding, has three window bays per house. The front door, a panelled door with fanlight, is placed in the southernmost bay in both houses. Each house has two six-pane sash windows, provided with hardstone sills. The fanlight of the doors is in both cases decorated with a tree of life. That of number 24 is original. The door there is also provided with a cast-iron grille. The northern side gable is likewise built of handmade brick, shows traces of alterations and is provided with four- and six-pane sash windows and, on the street side, a half-window. In front of the building is a brick pavement, at the corners provided with wrought-iron curly railings.
Valuation
The dwelling houses are of general importance. They have cultural-historical value as examples of the socio-historical development and as examples of the typological development of the extremely simple urban dwelling house for labourers or lower middle class.
