Introduction

Dwelling house with shop, built around 1895 in Neo-Renaissance style by an unknown architect. On what was probably vacant land, a building was erected on the commission of wine merchant J.C. Schultz with a shop on the ground floor and spacious accommodation above. Schultz left the building in 1904 and was succeeded by wine merchant Haverschmidt who occupied it until 1916. The building subsequently served amongst other purposes as a pawnshop for a jeweller, an ironmonger's, and now a greengrocer. An attorney's office is located on the upper storeys.

Description

EXTERIOR: Building on rectangular plan, three bays wide, of which the right two are slightly prominent and three storeys plus attic high. The front facade is executed in bright red pressed brick with whitened details in stucco or artificial stone. The west facade is plastered, the east and rear facades are of brown brick. The hipped roof is covered with slates. The facade is articulated vertically by three pilasters, which spring from consoles and run up to the drip moulding. The first storey is partly opened up and provided with a new shop front. The door to the upper dwelling was also replaced. Beneath the consoles of the three pilasters are satyrs' heads. The storeys are separated from each other by moulded bands. The second storey has three cross windows, each closed at the top with a moulded strip and fan-shaped stepping with natural stone coping blocks. The third storey has identical windows but each with a panel with cartouches in scroll moulding on the breast. The right bay is closed at the top by a cornice with ornamental brickwork, the two other bays by a stepped gable that curves inward by means of volutes, above which two gable steps with a diagonal pinacle. The crown has disappeared. Volutes and gable steps are executed in painted artificial stone. In the gable field there are, beside a round-arched window, two richly decorated wrought-iron wall anchors. The western roof plane contains a non-original roof dormer.

INTERIOR: The ground floor of the shop section has been completely rebuilt and structurally altered. In the vestibule of the residential section there were preserved amongst other features part of a tile frieze, the central section of the stucco ceiling and part of the door to the stairwell. The stair railings on iron balusters were preserved across all storeys. On the second and third storeys the richly decorated panel doors with overdoor panels in moulded frames were preserved. The wall between the front parlour and the side room was removed. The parlour contains amongst other features a richly worked stucco ceiling, a black marble fireplace mantel and an exceptionally richly worked shop front window with angled side and top edges. In the rear parlour again a fireplace mantel. On the third storey similar doors, ceilings and fireplace mantels were preserved amongst other features. The attic storey was completely rebuilt. There is also a light well here for the stairwell.

Valuation

Dwelling house with shop of general architectural-historical and cultural-historical significance:

- by virtue of the rich and, apart from the shop front, well-preserved Neo-Renaissance architecture with forcefully executed details such as mouldings and artificial stone ornaments;

- by virtue of the preserved interior components, of which in particular the doors and the shop front window on the second storey stand out through their far-reaching detailing;

- as an example of a distinguished middle-class dwelling from the late nineteenth century.
