Inleiding
- de bijzondere functie waarmee ze als zelfstandige woningen deel uitmaken van de immuniteit van de twee als monumenten beschermde gasthuizen met bijgebouwen in het noordelijke deel van de binnenstad;
- vanwege de vooral uitwendig gave stijlzuiverheid in Neo-Hollandse Renaissancestijl;

Description
Introduction
TWO DWELLINGS designed in 1894 by W.C. de Groot in the Neo-Renaissance style for the Sint-Anthony hospital.
After the filling in of the canal of Nieuweburen, Schoenmakersperk, Perkswaltje, etc. in 1860/'63, the new Sint-Anthony hospital was built in the years 1862/'65. In the following decades, accommodations for various ancillary functions were created on the Perkswaltje. Perkswaltje 4 and 6 were built simultaneously, for what function has not been evident from the sources, but it is reasonable to assume that they were intended for staff, as both are proper dwellings. Still in use as such today.
Description
EXTERIOR: Buildings on irregular ground plan with a rectangular main form of one storey with a truncated hipped roof with blue-glazed corrugated Frisian tiles. Number 4 is four bays wide, of which from left the third with entrance feature projects half a brick. Hard stone plinth and flight of steps. Brickwork of reddish-brown brick enriched with all kinds of ashlar elements: sill and band courses, niches and ornaments at the gable top. Flush-fitting T-windows with fan-shaped corbel tables. Panelled door with fanlight (with later placed tree of life with little bells). Crowning of the projection with consoles with heads, otherwise bricklaid mosaic frieze with rosettes of different forms and carved blocks beneath the moulded eaves gutter which turns at the gable top. Because of the continuous gutter the gable top looks like a substantial cabin. This gable top is formed in a rich manner in the Flemish Mannerist style with corbel brackets, cornice with grooved consoles, heavy moulding, balls, a stacked aedicula upon it with gable stone with the emblem of the hospital, the bell, as well as small corbel brackets and pediment with ball. On the rear the building was extended over the full width with a complete storey in the twenties. The spacious conservatory was newly built or completely renewed in 1913, as evidenced by the signature in one of the bricks: M.A. 1913.
Number 6 is three bays wide, of which the western with entrance feature projects one and a half bricks. Hard stone plinth and flight of steps. Brickwork of reddish-brown brick enriched with all kinds of ashlar elements: sill and band courses, niches and ornaments at the stepped gable top. Flush-fitting T-windows relieved by basket arches with arch drums of bricklaid mosaic. Door with fanlight relieved with round arch in the same decorative approach. The facade of the entrance projection crowned with a frieze of diagonally placed grey and red stones with at the corners diagonally placed consoles with heads. This is followed by the stepped top with a two-part small window and gable stone with the emblem of the hospital: the bell. Coping slabs, pinnacle with ornamental wall anchor, small corbel brackets and ball as crowning. On the rear the building was extended to two storeys in the thirties.
INTERIOR: In number 4 the rooms en suite on the ground floor have been converted into a large salon. The windows possess the original mouldings. The passage with panelled doors with mouldings and simple stucco ceiling retains its original character. The section west of the passage has been altered. The original narrow staircase leads to the upper floor in the roof space, where the beam structure in the attic rooms is visible. Number 6 is also internally modernized and there are still a number of minor traces of the original interior present.
VALUATION
Dwellings belonging to a hospital area of general cultural historical, architectural historical and urban planning importance by virtue of
- the exceptional function whereby they as independent dwellings form part of the immunity of the two hospitals protected as monuments with outbuildings in the northern part of the inner city;
- by virtue of the especially externally well-preserved stylistic purity in Neo-Dutch Renaissance style;
- the exceptional urban planning location as hospital dwellings in the closed building development opposite the gardens of the institution.
