Inleiding

- vanwege de bijzondere functie waardoor het als zelfstandige woning deel uitmaakt van de immuniteit van het dubbele gasthuis met bijgebouwen in het noordelijke deel van de binnenstad;

- vanwege de vooral uiwendig gave stijlzuiverheid in Neo-Hollandse Renaissancestijl;

Introduction

GARDENER'S DWELLING, designed in 1917 by W.C. de Groot in the Neo-Dutch Renaissance style for the Sint-Anthony hospital.

After the filling in of the canal of Nieuweburen, Schoenmakersperk, Perkswaltje, etc. in 1860/'63, the new Sint-Anthony hospital was built in the years 1862/'65. In the following decades, accommodations for various ancillary functions were created on the Perkswaltje. The house of Miss Coets on the corner of the Wijde Gasthuissteeg was purchased by the hospital in 1910. Until her death in 1917, a widow living there was able to remain, but after that the building was demolished to make room for a gardener's dwelling. This was erected in front of the plant greenhouse built in 1913 according to a design by W.C. de Groot but demolished in 1974 on the east side of the Wijde Gasthuissteeg. The gardens of the two hospital buildings were maintained at that time by a permanent gardener, assisted by two labourers. The dwelling has not been occupied by the gardener since the early eighties, but is still used as a dwelling.

Description

EXTERIOR: Building on irregular plan of one storey with high hipped roof. Walls largely built of reddish-brown brick; the high plinths of brownish-grey brick. High on the wall sections ornamental wall anchors have been applied. The roof slopes are covered with blue-glazed corrugated Frisian tiles. On the front facade the dwelling consists of two wings. The eastern wing stands in the building line of two window bays wide with a gable top. Between the first storey and the gable top a frieze is incorporated with a diagonal row of headers. The stepped gable, overhanging on the sides and resting on natural stone consoles and covered with natural stone slabs, is crowned by a pinnacle on a console and with a crown-shaped ornament as termination.

The western wing, set back a few bricks, is two bays wide and one window bay deep. In the inner corner of the wings the now blocked but on the outside still original entrance feature is located. A horizontal, wooden, moulded canopy rests on carved wooden small columns on slightly projecting wall piers on either side of a brick step. The entrance feature consists of a framed door with column and consoles beneath the canopy and above it an oval fanlight with glass-in-lead in a rendered, slightly recessed field, decorated with a flower garland. Drip moulding on carved consoles. On the ground floor flush-fitting windows with mullion, below with shutters; fanlight with small glazing bars and basket-arch relieving arches and arch drums with mosaic of projecting and recessed headers. In the gable top at a small cross window the same treatment. On the roof slope a chapel with hipped roof.

On the rear the wings are not distinguishable and the dwelling is entirely extended, originally over two-thirds of the width; in 1988 the last section was filled in with a new entrance feature of studs and rails on the alley side.

INTERIOR: The simple interior with amongst others mouldings and panelled doors is partially on the ground floor and wholly on the upper floor in original condition; the panelled doors for the small rooms above have fanlights. On the ground floor in 1988 two front rooms were connected with each other, as a result of which the hall with entrance feature was lost.

VALUATION

Former gardener's dwelling of general cultural historical and architectural historical and urban planning importance

- by virtue of the exceptional function whereby it as an independent dwelling forms part of the immunity of the double hospital with outbuildings in the northern part of the inner city;

- by virtue of the especially externally well-preserved stylistic purity in Neo-Dutch Renaissance style;

- by virtue of the urban planning location as one of the hospital dwellings in the closed building development opposite the gardens of the institution.
