Inleiding

Introduction

CHURCH BUILDING (Dutch Reformed) built as a central structure in 1858, located on a terp. The church building is constructed in a Water Authority style executed with neo-gothic and neo-classical characteristics. The application of pointed arch windows with forked tracery refers to the neo-gothic, while the octagonal form chosen as a central structure and the use of corner pilasters are derived from neo-classicism. The building possesses a monumental cabinet ORGAN and a monumental CLOCK. The church has been in use by the Dutch Reformed Congregation of Haarlo and Waterhoek since 1983.

The church, surrounded by old trees, is located near a cemetery to the south of the village core of Haarlo along the road leading to Beltrum.

Description

The church displays an octagonal floor plan, is constructed in brick (English bond) and possesses a corresponding octagonal tent roof lined with muted old Dutch tile, which is crowned by a zinc roof turret with a cross and a weathervane. Of the eight facades marked with corner pilasters, four possess pointed arch windows with large cast-iron church windows, consisting of a lower window with 5x7-pane division and the arch with interlocking forked tracery. Three facades, two at the front in which the doors (wing panel doors) are incorporated and the gable behind the liturgical centre, are executed blind. The gable between the two mentioned entrance doors is provided with two low-placed windows and one in the middle above. These three facades also contain as the only ones a cemented plinth. The windows have stone drip mouldings and a 1½-brick surround. The tent roof is provided with a gutter and contains a chimney at the front. On top a lantern with CLOCK by G.T. van Heuvel, 1857.

The INTERIOR possesses several valuable components and the spatial arrangement is unchanged. The two entrance doors open onto a small hallway that leads to the church space and also (left entrance) provides access to the consistory room (with beam ceiling and timber framing) and on the right the stairs to the organ gallery located above it. Remarkable is that the aforementioned rooms are contained within the octagonal floor plan of the church building. The church space is largely occupied by a pew plan in three rows, radially directed toward the pulpit with an ascending floor made of planks. The rows are marked with the letters a-c and each pew is numbered. They have the form of a circular segment and thereby emphasize the centralizing effect of the form of the church building. The middle row contains six pews (the seventh row disappeared about twenty years ago); the flanks that end against the walls contain ten each. The pews with open and closed backrests (a comfort, but also an expression of status, which wealthy farmers appropriated for themselves) are provided with lockable doors. At the side walls these doors are suggested by paintings. In the liturgical centre the original pulpit with sounding board, the communion table and a cabinet ORGAN, made circa 1765 by H.H. Hess, restored in 1972 by Verschueren Orgelbouw of Heythuysen.

Valuation

CHURCH BUILDING 1858 in an appearance in which influences of the neo-gothic and neo-classical style are incorporated.

- Of architectural historical value because of the distinctive octagonal form, within which the consistory room is incorporated, with an interior that is to a large extent well-preserved.

- Of urban planning value because of its location on a terp just outside the village core, near the churchyard and amidst vegetation of old trees.

- Of cultural historical value as a distinctive expression of a spiritual development.
