Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
SYNAGOGUE, predominantly constructed in brick (English bond), erected on a rectangular ground plan and comprising one storey under a hipped roof covered with dampened Dutch tiles. Against the right side gable is a later extension, also of one storey, lower in height, under a gently sloping zinc rafter roof. Due to the current function of the synagogue as a smokehouse, the interior is in poor condition, but structurally appears sound at first sight.
The FRONT FACADE is four window bays wide and is articulated by five pilasters on a continuous cornice basement. From the plinth to the list interrupted by the window arches, the brickwork is laid in stretcher bond; above this in English bond. The facade is terminated with a corniced main cornice and entablature with an attic above, which conceals the gutter and roof covering from view. The basement, pilasters, main cornice and entablature and attic are plastered. The pilasters are terminated with volute capitals in Ionic style, presumably of natural or artificial stone. The shafts contain casements. The facade contains four tall cast-iron round-arched windows. The windows have lower frames consisting of 2x3 panes with glazing bars in diamond pattern, whilst the semi-circular upper frames contain glazing bars featuring half and full circles. On the division between upper and lower frame, the facade has a plastered profiled drip moulding, which follows the semi-circular termination of the windows. Beneath the windows are recessed plastered panels. Beneath the plastered window sills is likewise a plastered drip moulding. Insofar as observable, the plastered areas have been painted: pilasters, main cornice, entablature and drip moulding ochre yellow, the mirror panels and recessed panels of the attic cream, the basement liver-coloured and the fields beneath the windows cream with an ochre yellow band around.
The front facade of the extension is blind and contains a plastered corner pilaster. The facade has a plastered plinth and is terminated by a similarly profiled list.
The LEFT SIDE GABLE is cemented and contains an incised double door. The brick and the joint (colour) do not match those of the remaining facades. Investigation will need to determine whether this concerns an older wall, belonging to the predecessor of the current synagogue, which stood on the same spot. A master gutter provides drainage.
The austere REAR FACADE is articulated by five pilasters. The facade contains four cast-iron round-arched windows, the same as in the front facade, but here with double roll-mounted semi-circular termination. In the facade is a cantilever flue. Only the window sills in the facade are plastered. The rear facade of the extension is blind and contains a plastered corner pilaster. The facade has a plastered plinth and is terminated by a similarly profiled list.
The RIGHT SIDE GABLE contains plastered corner pilasters and a similarly plastered plinth, main cornice and entablature and attic. Ornament is absent here, apart from the profiling of a few mouldings. The facade has entirely to the right a door with above it a plastered facade panel, relieved by a one-and-a-half brick course.
The right side gable of the extension contains plastered corner pilasters and a plastered plinth. The facade has a round-arched entrance with double door. The storey above has a round cast-iron window. The window is provided with glazing bars in floral motif. The window and round arch of the entrance are provided with a plastered profiled list.
The INTERIOR is as follows: the entrance is located in the right wall, accessible via the portal in the extension. The women's gallery is above it, accessible via a staircase in the extension there. The gallery rests on wooden columns, which have a dimensioning and profiling that one would expect more in cast-iron columns. The gallery has a balustrade of turned balusters above a broad rail with applied centrelis motif.
The space is covered with a flattened barrel vault, executed in stucco and resting on a profiled plastered list. Where the superstructure of the Ark adjoins the ceiling, the ceiling has a projecting element. The walls have a painted dark brown wainscoting, against the left and right wall beneath the cornice provided with mirrors and rectangular panels, which are marbled in a light colour. At front and rear walls the panels are absent, because the benches were placed here. The ceiling is presumably not originally painted.
The floor is provided with a cement layer, which is shaped and coloured as a floor of imitation black marble tiles. The portal in the extension has a flat ceiling, which is painted with in the centre a Star of David and along the edge a double line. The walls have painted wainscoting with at the height of the cornice a motif border of leaves and lines, executed by means of a stencil.
Assessment
SYNAGOGUE from 1877.
- Of architectural historical value due to the well-preserved main form, detailing and material use. The building is evidence of a building style that occurs rarely in this locality. In the interior some well-preserved elements are present.
- Of urban planning significance due to the location in the street in the town centre.
- The object is of social and cultural historical value due to its former function as a synagogue and thus forms a reminder of the Jewish community in the municipality of Borculo. The object has important ensemble value in combination with the associated bathhouse.
