Inleiding
KANTONGERECHT, gebouwd in 1883 naar een ontwerp van rijksbouwmeester van Justitie J.F. Metzelaar (1818-1897) in een Eclectische stijl waarin Neo-Gotische elementen zijn te herkennen. In Sneek en Ommen is een zelfde kantongerecht gebouwd, eveneens naar een ontwerp van Metzelaar. De plattegrond van het kantongerecht is opgebouwd uit een lange hal die ontsluiting geeft aan kamers die aan weerszijden liggen. In 1980 kreeg het pand de functie van muziekschool. Het kantongerecht is gelegen op de hoek van de Geert Waldastraat en De Gast en vormt een monumentale beëindiging van een gebied, De Gast genaamd, dat zal worden voorgedragen als beschermd gezicht.
Omschrijving
Het twee verdiepingen hoge, deels onderkelderde KANTONGERECHT op rechthoekige plattegrond is opgetrokken in rode baksteen op een trasraam van witte steen; de achtergevel is gepleisterd; speklagen van witte steen; gemetseld fries; vlechtwerk van witte steen in de tuitgevels; muurankers. Het pand wordt gedekt door een zadeldak waarop zwarte geglazuurde Hollandse pannen; houten goot op natuurstenen klossen; aan de voorzijde een beschoten dakkapel onder zadeldak beëindigd met een tuitgevel waarin een halfrond vierruits venster. De gevels worden geleed door op de begane grond getoogde zesruits vensters met in de bovenlichten geel glas en op de eerste verdieping halfronde zesruits vensters, alle onder een boog van rode baksteen en natuursteen en onderdorpel van hardsteen; aan de voorzijde gemetselde pilasters.
Door zes gemetselde pilasters wordt de voorgevel (oostzijde) in vijf gevelvelden verdeeld. De entree bevindt zich in het linker gevelveld en bestaat uit twee houten paneeldeuren met getoogd tweeruits bovenlicht waarin geel glas; niet-originele invalidenopgang. Aan de rechterzijde van de entree vier getoogde zesruits vensters. Op de eerste verdieping vijf halfronde zesruits vensters.
In de tuitgevel aan de zuidzijde twee zesruits vensters, een kleine staande opening onder roodbakstenen strek en een niet-originele nooduitgang.
In de achtergevel (westzijde) vier getoogde zesruits vensters en drie staande vensters deels met diefijzer.
In de tuitgevel aan de noordzijde een houten paneeldeur met getoogd tweeruits bovenlicht waarvoor een twee treden hoge hardstenen stoep en vier getoogde zesruits vensters.
In het INTERIEUR zijn ondermeer van belang: op de begane grond de lange hal met aan weerszijden kamers, de houten paneeldeuren, in de hal de houten tochtdeur met roedenverdeling en bovenlicht, in de gang de bogen, de beschoten kap.

Kantongerecht van algemeen belang vanwege architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde:

CANTON COURT, built in 1883 according to a design by state architect for Justice J.F. Metzelaar (1818-1897) in an Eclectic style in which Neo-Gothic elements can be recognised. In Sneek and Ommen an identical canton court was built, also according to a design by Metzelaar. The ground plan of the canton court is composed of a long hall that provides access to rooms situated on either side. In 1980 the building acquired the function of music school. Description
The two-storey, partly cellared CANTON COURT on a rectangular ground plan is constructed in red brick on a travertine frame of white stone; the rear facade is rendered; quoin layers of white stone; mortared frieze; lattice work of white stone in the spout gables; ornamental wall anchors. The building is covered by a gabled roof with black glazed Dutch tiles; wooden gutter on natural stone corbels; on the front side a boarded roof dormer under gabled roof terminated with a spout gable containing a semicircular four-pane window. The facades are articulated by arched six-pane windows on the ground floor with yellow glass in the top lights and on the first floor semicircular six-pane windows, all under an arch of red brick and natural stone and sill of hardstone; on the front side mortared pilasters.
By six mortared pilasters the front facade (east side) is divided into five facade sections. The entrance is located in the left facade section and consists of two wooden panelled doors with arched two-pane top light containing yellow glass; non-original disabled access ramp. On the right side of the entrance four arched six-pane windows. On the first floor five semicircular six-pane windows.
In the spout gable on the south side two six-pane windows, a small standing opening under red brick stretcher and a non-original emergency exit.
In the rear facade (west side) four arched six-pane windows and three standing windows partly with theft bars.
In the spout gable on the north side a wooden panelled door with arched two-pane top light in front of which a two-step high hardstone stoop and four arched six-pane windows.
In the INTERIOR are noteworthy amongst others: on the ground floor the long hall with rooms on either side, the wooden panelled doors, in the hall the wooden draught door with glazing bars and fanlight, in the passage the arches, the boarded roof structure.
