Omschrijving
Inleiding
Wright. Wils was, evenals J.J.P.

Description
Introduction
CHURCH of the Dutch Reformed Church of the type hall church. The church was designed in 1916 by architect Jan Wils and executed in 1923-24 in Expressionist architectural style with clear influences from F.L. Wright. Wils was, like J.J.P. Oud and R. van 't Hoff, one of the architects from De Stijl who were particularly inspired by Wright. The stained glass windows are possibly designed by T. van Doesburg or by someone of similar style.
The church is built against the Lekdijk on the outer dike side. The tall bell tower marks the location of the church in the bend of the dike near the nearby village centre.
NB In 1966 the church was partly adapted: the organ was removed, the sloping floor was taken out, the pew arrangement was changed and the pulpit and communion table were renewed. In 1997 the jointing was renewed (flush joint).
Description
The church is constructed from a rectangular floor plan in yellow brickwork from an articulated plinth. Halfway along the side facade (south) a tall bell tower that falls within the rectangular floor plan of the church. The location on the dike gives the north side a basement storey. The entire building has a gabled roof with the ridge direction parallel to the dike. Roof covering with red Romanesque tiles. The bell tower has a small gabled roof with the ridge direction at right angles to the long facade.
On both long facades a projecting facade section that is divided into three bays by projecting pilasters, each terminated by a relieving arch. From the tower a meter-high freestanding masonry wall runs over the building boundary to the rear facade. At the end elevations pointed gables with natural stone corner pieces. The wall openings are closed by arches.
The symmetrical front facade (west) has in the centre a projecting entrance portico under a narrow hipped roof. Before the double doors three masonry steps with masonry balustrades and a tiled landing; short wooden canopy above the entrance. On either side of the portico a horizontal window, above the portico a nine-pane window.
The right facade (south) runs along the Molenweg. To the right of the tower the facade is set back slightly so that the roof covering projects. Between the pilasters, per bay, a multi-pane window with stained glass windows. Around the windows a recessed masonry surround that continues at the corners. Above the multi-pane window a narrow horizontal window. The square tower consists of five storeys with on the ground floor an entrance section with double doors on a staircase flanked by masonry walls. On the south-west corner of the tower is a projecting facade section with at the highest point a clock face; above this ventilation openings on all sides. The tower is articulated by double, angled natural stone band courses with between them at the corners small stepped light windows. Above the tower doors a sandstone band course that continues to the rear facade. This band forms the lintel of various standing and square wall openings in the side and rear facades. Above this band several horizontal window strips.
The rear facade (east) has on the right a rear door. On the left a recessed blind facade section with only a rear door and on the upper storey a small window.
The basement storey of the northern side facade has no wall openings and is slightly articulated. At the higher facade section, as in the south facade, four pilasters that run the full height of the facade.
In the interior of particular importance is the roof truss structure with wooden rafters with collar ties and blocks. Stained glass windows in the long facades of the church in the De Stijl style. Two-manual mechanical organ built by the Van Dam company in 1867 for the reformed church of Gorredijk. In 1967 the organ was sold to Kinderdijk, where it was installed by Will Boegem. In 1983 Flentrop carried out a restoration. The original state of 1867 was completely restored in the process.
Valuation
The church is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as a representative example of a Dutch Reformed Church with a special location on the Lek dike.
The church is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as part of the oeuvre of Jan Wils, renowned Dutch architect from De Stijl with an important role in pre-war architectural history. And because of the Expressionist architectural style in conjunction with the stained glass windows in the De Stijl style.
The church is, as regards the exterior, intact in main form and material use and possesses a special roof truss structure.
The church is of urban planning importance as part of the built environment along the dike. In particular, the tall tower marks the location of the village along the Noord.
