Inleiding

Introduction

Roman Catholic CHURCH BUILDING, built in 1939-1940 according to a design by Amsterdam architect H.M. Martens on behalf of the Roman Catholic Zuiderzeestichting at Warmond. The church is stylistically related to the architecture of the Delft School.

The church has a special urban planning situation on the curved south side of Prof. G. Molierestraat, one of the main thoroughfares of the Wieringerwerf core.

The church was damaged during the 1945 inundation. H.M. Martens restored the church in 1947 and added a priest's choir with five-sided apse to the rear (east side).

Description

Church building of the hall church type with gabled roof and a square tower on the west. The masonry is built in red-yellow brick with natural stone at a number of structural points. The covering of the gabled roofs above priest's choir and nave consists of black Dutch tile. The church has a dwarf transept on the north side, a five-sided apse on the east side with north of that a five-sided absidiole with two small narrow round-arch windows. The apse has two pairs of coupled round-arch windows. Apse and absidiole have half hipped roofs with slate in Maas covering. The east gable of the priest's choir (gable above the apse) has flanking pilasters on the transition to the gable top. The gable top is crowned by a Latin cross in brickwork. The priest's choir is narrower and lower than the nave. The dwarf transept has a large rose window with stained glass. The eastern wall of the transept has coupled windows. Perpendicular to the south side of the priest's choir stand two rectangular building volumes under gabled roof. The most easterly volume contains the sacristy. The eastern wall of this sacristy has two pairs of coupled round-arch windows and an arched door.

The nave has five bays which on the exterior are separated from each other by stepped buttresses. The four bays from the priest's choir have a round-arch window with stained glass. The fifth bay has on the north side a narrow extension under a lean-to roof and above that two narrow coupled round-arch windows. On the south side this bay contains the connection with the presbytery.

In the heavy square tower is located the sheltered main entrance of the church. The canopy has the form of a gabled roof on posts. The tower is built in ashlar. At the top the tower has on four sides pairs of sound holes. The four corners of the tower are emphasised by rising reinforcements with pointed tops. The tower has a slate-covered spire with Maas covering. The spire is crowned by a ball with a Latin cross on top.

The interior was largely restored in its original form in 1947.

Valuation

The Roman Catholic church at Wieringerwerf is of general importance for its cultural and architectural historical value as a well-preserved example of a striking church building from the early period of the Wieringermeerpolder. The object has situational value because of its prominent urban planning location in the core of Wieringerwerf.
