Inleiding

Introduction

Iron RAILWAY BRIDGE of the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij from 1868, currently (1996) out of use. The railway bridge is situated over the Oostsluis, the most easterly of a complex of three locks placed next to each other. The railway bridge was part of the first railway connection in the Netherlands, laid out in 1839 between Amsterdam and Haarlem, and forms the last element still remaining in situ of that. Originally the railway line was led over the locks with wooden bridges, but from 1859 various examples from the Amsterdam-Haarlem-Leiden section were replaced as needed, piece by piece, with heavier bridges. The iron railway bridge described here was put into service in 1868 according to H.S.M. specification no. 24.

Description

Cast iron railway bridge consisting of two parallel cast iron girders with a length of 11.50 El (according to the specification). The solid, in cross-section symmetrical and slightly curved at the top, body has between the thick flanges on both sides reinforcing ribs. They carry the indication "O.S.".

These main beams are connected to each other by broad-flange profiles. Of the presumed fourteen cross beams, twelve are visible, the remainder are incorporated into the lock masonry. They are held in place by screw bolts.

The 'Standard gauge' width can still be read from the attachment points of the rail construction. The dimensions of the bridge are (according to the specification) 3.00 El for the main beams and 2.94 El for the cross beams.

Valuation

The railway bridge is of general importance from a cultural historical and architectural historical point of view as the only remaining element that in situ marks the course of the first railway line in the Netherlands. The railway bridge is of architectural historical value as a rarely surviving and early example of a construction with cast iron beams, dating from the third quarter of the 19th century. Furthermore, the railway bridge has situational value through its striking urban planning setting in Halfweg.
