Inleiding
TRANSFORMATORSTATION, gebouwd omstreeks 1915 in de trant van het Nieuwe Bouwen, naar ontwerp van architect J.B. van Loghem in opdracht van de Kennemer Electriciteits Maatschappij (K.E.M.) die na overname door de provincie in 1917 Provinciaal Energiebedrijf van Noord-Holland (P.E.N.) zou gaan heten. Het trafostation is gelegen aan de westzijde van de Schoolstraat. Het betreft hier een eenmalig uitgevoerd type trafostation binnen een serie ontwerpen die Van Loghem tussen 1914 en 1920 voor K.E.M. en P.E.N. maakte. Het trafostation werd gerestaureerd in 1984.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaand trafostation, gebouwd op rechthoekige plattegrond met oost-westgerichte lengte-as. Aan de oostzijde is een toren op rechthoekige grondslag opgenomen. Het pand heeft een hoogte van een bouwlaag onder vrijwel plat dak, bedekt met dakleer. Het kleine tentdak van de toren is eveneens voorzien van dakleer. Het pand is opgetrokken in ruw gepleisterd muurwerk boven een plint in geel-grauwe baksteen, gemetseld in halfsteens- verband en afgezet met een rollaag. Het zuidelijk deel van het pand wordt rondom afgesloten door een betonnen cordonband waarboven zich een lichtstrook met glazen bouwstenen bevindt. Het noordelijk deel wordt afgesloten door een cordonband (zonder lichtstrook).
De voorgevel (O) heeft in het midden de risalerende toren, waarin een in geel en zwart uitgevoerd tegeltableau is aangebracht met de letters "K.E.M.". Op ooghoogte bevindt zich in de voorgevel van de toren een tegel met waakhond, in de linkerzijgevel van de toren bevindt zich naast een rechthoekige metalen toegangsdeur een tegel met haan. Boven de deur bevindt zich een in rode tegels uitgevoerde verticale streep in het pleisterwerk die de verticaliteit van de toren benadrukt. De toren wordt afgesloten door een betonnen cordonband, waarboven een strook met glazen bouwstenen en tentdak zijn aangebracht. De ontluchting vond tevens via de toren plaats. Links van de toren is de voorgevel blind, rechts van de toren bevat de voorgevel een dubbele rechthoekige metalen deur. Onder de cordonband van de voorgevel zijn enkele kleine ontluchtingsroosters aangebracht.
De linkerzijgevel (Z) bevat in het midden een grote rechthoekige dubbele houten deur met hardstenen onderdorpel, smeedijzeren gehengen en een zesruits-bovenlicht.
De achtergevel (W) heeft links een rechthoekige stalen deur. Onder de cordonband zijn vier kleine ontluchtingsroosters aangebracht.
De rechterzijgevel (N) is blind.

TRANSFORMER STATION, built around 1915 in the style of Nieuwe Bouwen, designed by architect J.B. van Loghem on commission from the Kennemer Electriciteits Maatschappij (K.E.M.) which after takeover by the province in 1917 became the Provinciaal Energiebedrijf van Noord-Holland (P.E.N.). The transformer station is located on the west side of the Schoolstraat. This is a unique example of a transformer station type within a series of designs that Van Loghem made for K.E.M. and P.E.N. between 1914 and 1920. The transformer station was restored in 1984.
Description
Freestanding transformer station, built on a rectangular footprint with an east-west oriented length axis. On the east side a tower on a rectangular base is incorporated. The building has a height of one storey under a virtually flat roof, covered with roof felt. The small hipped roof of the tower is likewise provided with roof felt. The building is constructed of roughly rendered masonry above a plinth in yellow-grey brick, laid in half-brick bond and finished with a roll moulding. The southern part of the building is closed on all sides by a concrete band, above which is a light strip with glass blocks. The northern part is closed by a band (without light strip).
The front facade (E) has the projecting tower in the middle, in which a tile tableau executed in yellow and black is affixed with the letters "K.E.M.". At eye level in the front of the tower is a tile with a watchdog, in the left side facade of the tower next to a rectangular metal access door is a tile with a rooster. Above the door is a vertical stripe executed in red tiles in the rendering which emphasises the verticality of the tower. The tower is finished with a concrete band, above which a strip with glass blocks and hipped roof are affixed. Ventilation also took place via the tower. To the left of the tower the front facade is blank, to the right of the tower the front facade contains a double rectangular metal door. Below the band of the front facade some small ventilation grilles are affixed.
The left side facade (S) contains in the middle a large rectangular double wooden door with sandstone lower threshold, wrought-iron hinges and a six-pane fanlight.
The rear facade (W) has on the left a rectangular steel door. Below the band are four small ventilation grilles affixed.
The right side facade (N) is blank.
Valuation
The transformer station is of general interest from a cultural and architectural-historical perspective as a well-preserved example of utilitarian building from the second decade of the 20th century, constructed in the style of Nieuwe Bouwen. Moreover, the object is of importance as a characteristic component of the oeuvre of architect J.B. van Loghem.
