Inleiding

Introduction

(Former) MAYOR'S RESIDENCE "Duinwijk" built in 1823 on the instructions of the schout and later mayor Johannis Peeck. The roof dormer in the centre front dates from 1904 according to a plank found there. It is presumed that in that year the entire roof was renewed and also the balcony resting on four columns was added. The interior contains on the ground floor still some original components in Empire style. The building now serves as a guesthouse with a youth hostel to the rear and is situated on a spacious plot on the north side of the Binnenweg. N.B. The later outbuildings against the left side and rear facade are not part of the protection.

Description

On a rectangular ground plan a residential building of one storey under a hipped roof covered with brown-glazed Spanish tiles with the ridge line nearly parallel to the road. The exterior walls are built in red handmade brick (format 15-18 x 3.5 cm) in cross bond with struck joint and provided with a matching plinth. The front facade, the right side facade and the left half of the rear facade are finished at the top with a main cornice. At the ridge ends of the roof stand two corner chimneys of red brick with a zinc cap in the form of a bent-over tent roof crowned by a sphere. Both the front and rear facade have in the centre a brick roof dormer of red machine-made brick IJsselformaat (cross bond, struck joint) with a projecting gabled roof onto which brown-glazed Spanish tiles. The front facade (S) has five window bays with on the outer sides large T-windows with mirror-backed shutters and a central projection of slight depth in which three pairs of irregularly placed double terrace doors with fanlight. Each door half is provided with two windows one above the other of which the lower one is executed as a sash window. In front of the central projection lies a terrace paved in red handmade brick alternated with yellow facing brick along the edges. The wooden balcony above rests on, originally four, wooden Doric columns of which the shafts are provided with entasis. Around the balcony the main cornice continues. The balcony is accessible via a double balcony door with fanlight flanked by sash windows with concrete drip moulding. At the roof overhang of the roof dormer a hanging post with vertical latticework and a worked corbel.

In the right side facade (E) is situated on the left a T-window and on the right a panel door with fanlight which can be reached via a hardstone step of two treads. The panel door contains two narrow windows and a decorative cast-iron grille. The left side facade (W) is, like the right half of the rear facade, largely obscured by later outbuildings.

In the rear facade (N) a narrow twelve-light sash window and a panel door flanked by narrow side lights with fanlight and decorative ironwork. In front of the door lies a hardstone step with an iron grille. At the level of the floor of the upper storey the rear facade is provided with spandrel anchors. The wind braces of the roof dormer in the centre rear are crowned by a corbel. The interior is still partly in its original state from the time of construction and contains among others in the study at the front right a semicircular fireplace niche framed by fluted pilasters carrying a matching round arch with a keystone bearing a chalice motif and above which a festoon hung in the middle by a ribbon, in the intermediate room a stucco ceiling with floral central and corner ornaments and a fireplace provided with a black marble mantlepiece with accents of yellow/lilac/purple speckled marble and an eclectic overmantel with among other things a three-cusped arch on corner pilasters, and in the former billiards room a beam ceiling and a traditional fireplace of which the overmantel rests on two fluted wall pilasters. The overmantel has chamfered corners, a mantelbeam with rhombus motifs and at the top a cornice with dentil moulding. Before the terrace doors in the last two rooms are full-height folding shutters. The three aforementioned rooms together form an enfilade of which the doors originally lay in one line. Most of the panel doors on the ground floor have in the lower half a round panel. In the north wall of the vestibule at the rear right the foundation stone is embedded on the right and on the left as pendant a tile tableau depicting the surroundings before the construction of Duinwijk. The foundation stone laid by the son of the client bears the following text: "JOHANNES CORNELIS PEECK,/ BORN 18 APRIL 1822/ HAS LAID THE FOUNDATION STONE/ OF THIS BUILDING,/ 30 JUNE 1823." Parallel to the passage situated along the rear facade is a wooden staircase with a quarter turn at the bottom and top. The attic has a roof truss structure with roof purlins covered in narrow boards.

Valuation

The former mayor's residence is of general importance on account of its cultural and architectural historical value as a largely well-preserved residential building from the first quarter of the nineteenth century, built in a craftsman-traditional manner with Empire interior elements.
