HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Oud-Poelgeest. The partly in detail and partly in structure well-preserved 19th-century layout in landscape style came into being in various phases while retaining the formal structure. The still-present 17th-century main structure is determined by the partly double moat, the straight access road in the axis of the house which continues behind the house in a short grand canal. The access road was laid with a curve to the house in the 19th century, but the 17th-century route was restored around 1866; in front of the house the lane ends in a roundel. The moat underwent 19th-century adaptations: on the rear side of the house the moat was excavated into a pond feature and the rectangular outer moat situated at some distance was filled in on the northwestern side. The (18th-century) grand canal forms the connection between the moat and waterway. The formal structure is best experienced from the straight access road to the house with on either side thereof the 19th-century walking woods of tall trees with some lanes and paths in curved and winding layout, partly with tree-lined planting of oak and beech; on the rear side of the house the layout in landscape style is more emphasized by the water feature, the meadow, views to the outside and romantic elements (towers/chapel/bridge). Around the pond feature a spacious strip of grass with some solitary trees; from the house runs a sight line outwards over the pond and the meadow (currently ice rink) originally with a view of Leiden. From the Haarlemmertrekvaart a fine view of the house is also obtained and a little further of the chapel located at the waterway. To the northwest of the coach house, parallel to the access road were originally situated the vegetable garden and orchard, as shown by the Topographic Military Map of 1874-1912.
