HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT of the historical estate Hartekamp is to be distinguished into that surrounding the main building (west side Herenweg I) and the back garden (east side Herenweg II).

I. The park layout to the west of the Herenweg displays two main elements, namely the monumental open forecourt with therein the circulating entrance drive laid out by garden architect L. Springer and the part laid out in landscape style by garden architect J.D. Zocher sr. behind the house, wherein the large circular pond forms the binding element. Within this are found remains of the 17th and 18th-century layout and three smaller partial gardens from the early 20th century. From the originally 17th-century layout of the estate remains the southern boundary with the boundary ditches, which still have a jagged staggered course. In the almost extreme south-western part thereof a raised area is visible. This is the remnant of the 18th-century hill that was laid out here to be able to survey the maze. Recently the sight line from the house to the Leidsevaart has been opened up again. The forecourt, possibly also transformed by Zocher in landscape style, displays an open character with an expansive lawn, in which along the edges some tree groups and solitary trees. The drive, adapted by Springer in 1902 to the new wings of the house, displays the form of a half-ellipse with on both sides an identical gate section. The park behind the house is laid out around the large circular winding pond. In the middle thereof is situated an island, which on the west side is accessible by an originally intact gate-enclosed small bridge. Around the pond is a system of winding paths. Throughout the entire park, front and back, many old trees are found, among others oaks, lindens and planes. Furthermore there are three smaller partial gardens, two of which were laid out by garden architect H.A.C. Poortman. In 1909 the pergola was built just to the north-west of the house and this part was reorganised in conjunction with the orangery. It consists of a rectangular lawn, surrounded by a walking path and divided with some semi-circular yew hedges, within which a bench is placed. A second garden laid out by Poortman is situated directly to the south next to the house. The original layout with a rosarium has disappeared, but the garden enclosed by a hedge is still clearly recognisable. Finally, there is a third garden, presumably laid out in the 1930s, to the north of the winding pond. This consists of a small-scale layout with a varied shrub planting: the eastern part has a continuous planting through which run some narrow winding paths accompanied by flagstones and rock blocks and a seating area (bench) - and the western part with a sunken rectangular lawn surrounded by a wall of flagstones.

II. The park layout to the east of the Herenweg, the Back Garden, presents itself from a landscape perspective in two parts. The northern, highly undulating and wooded part and the southern, lower-lying flat part with some open spaces where the vegetable gardens were also situated. In both parts traces of the 18th-century layout within the later landscaped park are still found. In the first place the oldest layout of the high hill - on which originally the garden house or the cupola stood - is still present. The sight line to the house De Hartekamp is virtually entirely lost through later planting and vegetation. From the layout dating from the time of Clifford (1709-1788) is still recognisable: the Parnassus hill, the semi-circular amphitheatre, the quarter-circular raised form for the protection of the vegetable gardens in the south-west and the two built small gates that marked the vegetable garden. Possibly the small pond is a remnant of the long straight pond that was here.

The HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT is of general importance because of

- the significance of the layout for the history of garden architecture and historical botany;

- the landscape layout with therein still recognisable older formal elements;
