Rectory with coach house, boundary wall and gate

Introduction

RECTORY, dating from 1845 and erected in the style of Neo-Classicism. The substantial house with wooden conservatory stands on a spacious walled estate with lawns, paved courtyard with L-shaped coach house and monumental gate. In the garden a mature horse chestnut and walnut tree. COACH HOUSE, dating from ca. 1900 and erected in Craftsman-traditional manner with features of Neo-Gothic. The building on an L-shaped plan sits with a long blind wall facing the street and forms a whole with the boundary wall and monumental gate. It is located beside the rectory on a paved square. The building replaces a predecessor that burned down in 1899. Besides a stable for coach and horse, it contains a consulting room, washhouse, cellar and several privies.

Description

The two-storey rectory on L-shaped plan is erected from hand-moulded brick in stretcher bond. The composite hipped roof is covered with slate in Maas bond. On the roof of the block-shaped main building a small dome tower with bell (Van Bergen Heiligerlee, 1947). Two brick chimneys at the ends of the ridge. Above the entrance section of the front facade and centrally on the rear facade stands a simple attached roof dormer under gabled roof. The facades are crowned by a partly wooden, partly plastered profiled cornice on ornamental consoles, consisting of volutes with a leaf motif. Partly the building has brick gutters on corbels. The entire building has windows with 6-pane sash windows, frame casings and hardstone drip mouldings. The 5-bay front facade has on either side of the panelled door with fanlight two windows with 6-pane sash windows and thumbpieces. Door and windows, all of equal height, are provided with frame casings and hardstone drip mouldings. Against the right side facade stands a wooden conservatory in half-timbered construction with gabled roof of shingle slates and with carved wooden decorative edges (19th century). In the pointed gable a round iron window with St Andrew's cross glazing bar, below four panels with 6-pane windows and 5-section fanlights in which amongst others coloured glass. Against the rear facade adjoins a long wing, which exhibits the same features as the main building. In the corner a monumental entrance section, framed by wooden pilasters on hardstone bases and a profiled cornice on volute consoles. Hardstone threshold. Above a profiled impost a fanlight with stained and leaded glass. Richly worked double panelled door with ornamental nail and cushion panels with pearl borders. The arrangement of the windows on the ground floor has been simplified in favour of four-section stained-glass windows (1943). At the far right is a simpler entrance section with panelled door and carved fanlight. Hardstone bases and undersill. The other facades are of a more closed character on the ground floor. Worth mentioning is a large round cast-iron window with ornamental cross glazing bar (leaf motifs) in the long facade to the left of the front facade. Water tank with pump. Shutters, interior shutters and blinds are stored.

Interiorly the old arrangement has been largely preserved. Many details are noteworthy, among them a staircase opening into a double staircase. The railing is decorated with carved putti and leaf motifs in open-carved work, related to the carved work of the pulpit, communion rail and organ balustrade of the St Peter's Church. In the former private chapel, now archive storage, a tabernacle and cupboards. In the spacious suite to the left of the main entrance on Duinendaal four sliding doors with etched glass panels with floral motifs from the time of construction. A fireplace with stuccoed breast whereon the symbols of Faith, Hope and Charity. Stuccoed ceilings with floral motifs. Kitchen partly with original fittings, polychrome tile floor, fireplace and tiled wainscoting. Large cellar with red tiles, barrel-vaulted ceilings on wooden beams.

The coach house shares a long side wall with the boundary wall. The coach house is erected from machine-made brick in stretcher bond. It has a composite gabled roof between pointed gables and is covered with Flemish bond tiles. The pointed gables are topped with roof-ridge tiles and have a hardstone finial at the apex. The corners have projecting ears. Centrally in the gable top a cast-iron rose window with cross glazing bars. The long side wall on the street side is entirely blank and is divided by means of pilasters and a brick frieze with block and mouse-tooth pattern below the profiled wooden gutter moulding. Plastered plinth and staff anchors. The short pointed gable next to the entrance gate has in the centre a door with two-section fanlight, hardstone bases and undersill. To the left a window with 6-pane sash window. Window and door are both topped with a segmental arch course with brick mosaicing. Above frame casings. On the right a semi-circular closed small gate without frame with a rectangular door for a urinal. The arch has frame casings. The long facade on the right has two doors with hardstone bases and undersills and two-section fanlights (privies). In the centre a large 12-pane window with hardstone drip moulding. On the right a double door with three-section fanlight. All windows and doors have segmental arch courses with brick mosaicing. Below the large window a grating with a cellar window. Plastered plinth, staff anchors. The gable of the perpendicular wing has in the centre a double carriage gate with segmental arch opening with frame casings. On either side a window with 11-section frame with iron glazing bars. Above the carriage gate a loading hatch with gabled roof, filling with wooden trefoil, rabat sections and zigzag band, breaking through the gutter moulding. The short pointed gable on the right is as the aforementioned, except for a door.

Interiorly the old arrangement has been largely preserved. Coach house and horse stable with barrel-vaulted ceiling. Washhouse with two pumps and fireplace. Cellar with barrel-vaulted ceilings.

Evaluation

The rectory is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic development, as an example of a large rectory in the countryside and thus also has typological significance. The building illustrates strikingly the emancipation of Catholics which began to bear fruit around 1850. The rectory has architectural-historical value because of the internally and externally well-preserved main structure and the traditional use of materials as well as because of interior elements, notably the woodcarving, the stucco ornamentation and the glass windows.
