Omschrijving
Cultuurhistorische omschrijving

Description
Description
The R.C. CHURCH OF ST. CAECILIA is of the type CENTRALIZED BUILDING in combination with an AXIALLY oriented church with CAMPANILE. The longitudinal direction of the church is east-west with the choir facing west.
The church is built in brown-yellow brick in cross bond with cement-lime mortar closed off by a stretcher roller molding. The pointed-arch windows are filled with stained-glass windows. The building components of the church are finished with gabled roofs, hipped roofs, an octagonal tent roof with lantern to finish the central dome and a five-sided hipped roof to finish the choir. All roofs are covered with slate in Meuse bond except for the rhenish slate covering of the gabled roof above the nave.
The FRONT FACADE of the church consists of a narthex, with the bell tower on the left and the baptistry on the right. Centrally in the narthex is the entrance consisting of a double rectangular wooden door with pointed-arch-shaped arch vault filled with stained-glass windows enclosed by seven brick archivolts. In the gable top of the spout gable are three coupled pointed-arch windows with stained-glass windows. At the top of the top gable is a band of decorative brickwork and a brick spout with twice an overhanging brick gutter as shoulder pieces. The narthex with gabled roof is positioned as a lower building component against a higher nave with identical spout gable and rear gabled roof. In the gable top of this spout gable is in relief a brick cross.
To the left of the narthex is the bell tower consisting of four stages, finished with an octagonal spire with weathervane. The first stage consists of a square brick base. The entrance at the east side consists of a single rectangular wooden door with pointed-arch-shaped arch vault filled with stained-glass windows enclosed by two archivolts closed off by a roller molding. In the left side facade is a small stained-glass pointed-arch window. In the second stage, an octagonal tower is formed by beveling the square shapes. At the transition, on the corners of the base are small two-sided hipped roof sections. The four beveled blind facades are alternated by four sides with on three levels a stained-glass pointed-arch window. On the transition from the second to the third stage is a projecting brick decorative band. Above this band is in each side a pointed-arch-shaped sound opening with wooden sound boards, closed off with roller molding. An identical thickening occurs at the transition from the third to the fourth stage with blind beveled corners alternated by four sides with a wrought-iron clock face on which gold-colored numerals are applied. To the right of the narthex is the baptistry consisting of one storey covered by a combined gabled and three-sided hipped roof. The three-aisled nave with axial ground plan is broken through by a central octagonal dome with a span of nineteen meters with confession and devotional chapels around it. Under the octagonal tent roof with lantern and octagonal spire are on either side three facades. Against these facades are the side chapels above which three coupled pointed-arch windows closed off by a band of vertical decorative brickwork. In each facade of the middle chapel with attached three-sided hipped roof is a pointed-arch window. This chapel is flanked on both sides by a chapel with L-shaped ground plan finished by a combined roof consisting of an attached hipped roof with gabled roof. At the front this L connects to the tower and to the baptistry. At the rear it is finished by a combined roof with a cresting. In the facade are three coupled pointed-arch windows above the cement-lime mortar. On the ridge of the three chapels is a cresting. On the west side of the central dome the gabled roof continues above the nave with a five-sided hipped roof as the finish of the choir. In the gabled roof are in each slope two roof windows with attached hipped roofs. The rhenish slate covering on the gabled roof differs from the other Meuse bond covering.
On the south side of the choir is the SACRISTY with rectangular ground plan consisting of one storey finished by a hipped roof. The sacristy is connected with the choir by means of an intermediary section with flat roof. On the intermediary section is a tall square brick chimney shaft. In the facades of the sacristy are pointed-arch windows with on the west side a roof dormer with a four-pane gable window and flat roof.
In the INTERIOR are frequent stained-glass windows and tilework that contribute to the symbolism of the church. In the four large windows in the priest's choir are depicted St. Isidore, St. Joseph, the Holy Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart. Below the windows are five tile panels on which the Nativity of Jesus, Christ the Friend of Children, Christ the Good Shepherd, Christ on the Cross, Christ the Instituter of the Blessed Sacrament are depicted. The small windows depict creation, redemption and sanctification. In six times three small windows in the dome are depicted the six days of creation with God the Father always shown in the middle window. Redemption is depicted on the high altar. Sanctification by means of representation of baptism and confession in the stained-glass windows above the baptistry and confessionals. In the windows of the side aisles are depicted the twelve apostles and five saints (St. Willibrord, Boniface, Peter Canisius, Francis Xavier and the parish priest of Ars). Finally, the patron saint of the church and the parish St. Caecilia is shown on the stained glass in the pointed-arch window above the large entrance door above the portal of the church.
Besides the particularly rare tile panels in the priest's choir, the baptismal font stands out, the base of which consists of yellow, green, blue and black tiles. The interior of the church is executed in red brick with yellow Utrecht triplets for the vaults. The central space is covered by a star-shaped dome vault whose ribs rest on consoles in decorative brickwork.

Cultural-historical description
Architect C. HARDEMAN (1893-1961) was a member of the Nederlansch Instituut voor Architecten (N.I.V.A.). Originally from Rotterdam, he moved to Oldenzaal in 1925. He built many churches in Twente, for example in Rossum, and elsewhere in the country, for example in Delftzijl and Soest. In addition to churches, he received commissions for the construction of schools, elderly care centres and hospital renovations. In the church of Rietmolen he used, as he did in the church in Enter (Ov.), a combination of axial and central plan building. The combination of these two types provided the desired spatial effect, which allowed the parish to participate more fully in the liturgical celebration.
