Omschrijving

Description

This T-FARMHOUSE consists of a large rectangular main house of two storeys and covered with a shallow hipped roof with bituminous roofing. On the northwestern side a substantial rear house has been built against it with high side walls and a half-hipped roof (now covered with corrugated sheets, formerly tiles).

The substantial building mass of the MAIN HOUSE is entirely rendered and is accentuated by double corner pilasters on the front facade and single ones on the side facade. The pilasters project above the roof edge and are terminated at the top with a block-shaped capital-like projecting cornice. The rear facade of the main house has a string course with block tooth profile at the level of the storey floor that extends over the corner pilasters. The building mass is terminated with a main entablature with architrave, a frieze with consoles that support the cornice with double consoles applied on the front facade. The zinc gutters were applied later. All windows and door openings in the facades of the main house are terminated with a segment arch. The sash windows originally provided with glazing bars have been replaced or fixed in place and now consist of single-pane lower windows and single-pane fanlights. The window openings on the upper storey are provided with hardstone sills. On the ground floor the windows are fitted with new shutters. The main house is partially cellared. Left and right at the rear beneath the main house is an old cellar with a pressed barrel vault. The two cellars are separated from each other by a filled section the width of the corridor above. The cellars are presumably remains of the predecessor of the present main house. The left cellar is accessible from outside (under terrace), but still shows the old stair access inward, which however has been filled in. The right cellar still has the original access and stair from inside (leading into the hall in the rear house).

The FRONT FACADE is five bays wide with a risalit in the middle in which the front door is located. This risalit is accentuated on either side with corner pilasters that project above the roof and the whole is terminated with a sort of vaulted (segment arch-like) pediment. The front door is reached via a stoop of two steps high and is situated in a framed portal. The tall double panelled door is provided with diamond-head decorations. The fanlight is provided with a single-pane window. On the upper storey the recessed window openings in the second and fourth bay are bricked up. The shutters have all disappeared on the upper storey, but the hinges are still present. The window above the front door still has a two-part division in the fanlight.

The RIGHT SIDE FACADE is two bays wide with in the middle a strip with three small (WC) windows placed one above the other, terminated with a segment arch. The window openings in the first bay are bricked up. In the second bay exclusively on the ground floor still a window filling and shutters the same as those in the front facade. The LEFT SIDE FACADE has over its entire width between the corner pilasters a veranda with raised stoop. This stoop projects semi-circular outward in the middle. Four double cast-iron columns with small capitals support the lean-to roof with arched iron border decoration. Likewise richly decorated iron balustrade. On the ground floor there are two windows between which a door opening with an edging terminated with a worked cock's comb. The door opening is provided with a panelled door and a single-pane fanlight. To the right of the door is a hardstone plaque with the text: Rebuilt by the widow S. van Embden-Verwaaijen, G:H:S:E: van Embden, G:J:H: van Embden, J:W:A: van Embden, F:L:H: van Embden'. On the upper storey the bricked-up left and right window openings extend further downward than the middle one, and an undivided fanlight. Everywhere the hinges of the disappeared shutters are still visible.

The REAR FACADE (of main house): for a large part the rear house has been built against it here. On the left is a small window on the upper storey. On the right is a bricked-up large window opening on the upper storey. On the ground floor a window as in the front facade.

The slope clearly drops away at the side of the REAR HOUSE compared to the main house, which gives in particular the left side facade a great height. This facade also has the appearance of a front facade. Behind it were partially situated small offices and only further back the actual stable. The LEFT SIDE FACADE is unrendered. Originally six bays, of which the third from the left projects slightly forward (risalit) and formerly contained a door with a door step in front of it. Now there is a window here like the others. Above it is still an oval rosette with (formerly) a stag's head in it present. The (original) windows are six-pane windows terminated with a segment arch. The drip moulding with block tooth-shaped ornamentation of the main house is continued in this facade of the rear house. Above this drip moulding there are in a sort of mezzanine in the bays always small vertical windows with two-part division and terminated with a segment arch. In the fifth bay the window on the ground floor has been replaced by a broad horizontal new window with to the right of it (in the original sixth bay) a door, terminated with a segment arch. Between the fifth and sixth bay a new extra horizontal three-part window has been applied on the upper storey. At the roof edge (below the probably later applied zinc gutter) the facade projects slightly. Under the widened terrace in the corner of the main house and the rear house is the entrance to one of the two cellars. The REAR FACADE is rendered in the lower part up to the simple drip moulding, above that the facade is executed in fair-faced brickwork that was originally also rendered. In the lower part new sliding doors have been installed for the old part door opening. On either side is a three-part stable window not in its original position and on the far left and right a stall door terminated with a semi-circle. The extension on the right side facade and the shed parallel to the rear house fall outside the protection.

Valuation

T-FARMHOUSE, rebuilt around 1870 in Eclectic style by commission of the widow S. VAN EMBDEN-VERWAAIJEN.

- Of architectural-historical value as an example of a distinguished T-farmhouse with stylistic characteristics of Eclecticism from the third quarter of the nineteenth century which in this period still stands under strong influence of Neo-Classicism. Through the substantial building mass, the wide symmetrically arranged front facade of the main house, the applied architectural style and the rendering of the facades the whole acquired the character of a small country estate which in farmhouse construction can be regarded as relatively rare. The farmhouse stands out through high-quality aesthetic qualities, such as are expressed among others in the harmonious proportions of the farmhouse, the material use and the detailing. A striking element is formed by the veranda with cast-iron columns which occupies virtually the entire width of the side facade of the main house.

- Of urban-planning value as an essential and functional component of the farmhouse complex 'Vinkenhorst' which is of particular significance for the appearance of the area along the Oude Rijn.

- Of cultural-historical value as part of the farmhouse complex 'Vinkenhorst' which is important as a distinctive expression of the agricultural development of the area along the Oude Rijn and as an expression of societal development, namely the emergence, as a result of the brick industry, in the second half of the nineteenth century, of a new social elite which would considerably change the social stratification of the region. Also important as an expression of the strongly German-influenced typological and stylistic developments in farmhouse construction in the second half of the nineteenth century in the region formed by the Liemers and the Ooypolder.
