Inleiding

Introduction

UNION HALL of the Dutch Reformed church recently called 'De Schakel', built circa 1840 in a Craftsmanship-traditional style. Following the French occupation, King William I in 1816 imposed a new organisation on the dilapidated Reformed church, set out in the 'General Regulations'. The church also received a new name: Dutch Reformed church. This new regulation sought to breathe new life into the church and laid the foundation for freedom of doctrine. It was within the framework of 'The benefit for the general good' (part of the General Regulations) that this union hall was established. Among other things, lectures were held for the education of the people. Around 1860/1870 an extension was added with an identical volume in the same style. The extension from 1960 falls outside national heritage protection.

The building is located in the protected village townscape of Warffum at the top of the wierde on the corner of Kerkstraat and Pastorieweg. It was built on land where the first stone building of Warffum is said to have stood. Behind the union hall lie the deacon's cottages.

Description

The single-storey UNION HALL consisting of two building volumes on a rectangular plan is built in red brick and is covered by two gabled roofs with dark Dutch tiles; wooden gutters; ornamental wall anchors. The facades of the original building are articulated by semicircular twelve-light windows and those of the extension by twenty-light windows, all with decorative iron glazing bars in the fanlight, yellow brick eyebrow arch and sill; in the fanlights of the original building also cut glass with lily-like motifs. In the gable ends, with decorative wooden weathervanes, round windows with decorative glazing bars and a course of yellow brick.

The front facade (south side) on natural stone travertine frame is symmetrically laid out. The central entrance section, in front of which is a natural stone step, consists of double wooden doors with semicircular fanlight, containing decorative cast-iron glazing bars, under an eyebrow arch of yellow brick; on either side three semicircular windows.

The right part of the west facade (original building) is articulated by two semicircular windows (between which a non-original nameplate); the left part (1860/1870) by two clamped wooden doors with arched three-part fanlight with decorative glazing bars under a brick cockscomb.

The rear facade (north side) is articulated by a central clamped wooden door under a course (above which a non-original nameplate) with on either side two semicircular windows; to the right a small narrow window.

The left part of the east facade (original building) is articulated by two semicircular windows.

The INTERIOR is not eligible for national heritage protection due to alterations.

Valuation

Union hall of general importance on account of cultural and architectural-historical value:

- as an example of a union hall from circa 1850 in the province of Groningen

- on account of the austere design and special detailing

- on account of the relatively high degree of integrity of the exterior

- on account of the image-determining location in the protected village townscape of Warffum

- as a reminder of new legislation concerning the education of the people.
