Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE PARK- EN TUINAANLEG.
Waardering
De HISTORISCHE PARK- EN TUINAANLEG is van belang:
- vanwege de negentiende eeuwse aanleg in landschappelijke stijl, met daarin met name het fraaie wandelbos waarbij enkele elementen uit de achttiende eeuwse formele aanleg zijn behouden;
- vanwege de historische betekenis van de Griftdijk.

Description
Description of component 2: HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT.
The historic park and garden layout consists of four parts: the layout on the ISLAND on which the main building and the garden pavilion are situated; the WOODLAND WALK to the north of it; the GRIFT and the GRIFT DIKE and the PARK LAYOUT with winding pond to the east of it.
Little is known about the history of the garden. It is presumed that the transformation of the formal layout into the landscape layout began in the first half of the nineteenth century.
The ISLAND itself must be counted among the oldest, at least seventeenth-century designs. The present pond arrangement originated from the excavation of older ditches. In particular the western ditch has the width of a pond with a small island in it. The excavated soil was probably used to create the mound on which the garden pavilion is situated. The distance between the entrance gate and the house is so short that there is scarcely any trace of an avenue. On the forecourt lies a circular lawn. All garden urns and ornaments present here are of recent placement. The entrance gate has also been recently renewed. The ornamental planting is also of recent date. On the north and east sides of the island there was originally a bridge. These have since disappeared. Along the side of the garden wall are respectively the garage building renewed around 1975, the vegetable garden, now a flower garden, within a yew hedge and a wooden shed.
The WOODLAND WALK lies to the north of the island. It is now accessible via the footpath from the Bonenburgerweg and via a wooden bridge over the Grift. The masonry BRIDGE ABUTMENTS indicate that a bridge has been situated here from time immemorial. The planting along the edges consists of mixed deciduous trees, oaks and beeches. Within this the planting consists almost entirely of Japanese larch, which was planted in the 1950s at the expense of the original summer oak. A number of circular paths lead through the woodland.
The GRIFT DIKE can now be seen as an avenue within the layout, but was originally the traffic route between Apeldoorn and Zwolle. Following the construction of the Apeldoorn Canal in 1825 this function ceased. The dike has over most of its length the width of a cart track, widened approximately halfway with a footpath. The planting on both sides has consisted since time immemorial of oaks and beeches. This section of the dike extends from the Bonenburgerweg and curves towards the east until the point where the Grift and the Canal meet.
Between the Grift Dike and the Canal, the northern part was developed in the years 1850-1860 as a small-scale PARK LAYOUT. Of this, the winding pond, the system of avenues and several solitary trees are still recognizable. The lands to the north of this were used as cultivated ground until approximately 1920 and were subsequently converted to woodland. South of the park layout lies a rectangular pasture surrounded by an avenue of oaks and beeches, the design of which dates from before 1850 at least. South of this lay cultivated lands which were worked from the farms De Aernt and De Prins. These included, among other things, some hedges and standard fruit trees. However, this layout has disappeared.
Valuation
The HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT is valued:
- for the nineteenth-century layout in landscape style, in which in particular the fine woodland walk preserves some elements from the eighteenth-century formal layout;
- for the historical significance of the Grift Dike.
