The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 1: HOOFDGEBOUW.

Waardering

Het HOOFDHUIS is van belang:

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- als representatief en vrij gaaf bewaard voorbeeld uit het oeuvre van de Leeuwarder architect J.I. Douma;

- als karakteristiek en vrij gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een midden 19de-eeuws gepleisterd landhuis in neoclassicistische stijl;

- vanwege de vrij gaaf bewaarde plattegrond, indeling en afwerking van het interieur;

- vanwege de kenmerkende ligging binnen de 19de eeuwse parkaanleg;

- vanwege de functioneel- en visueel-ruimtelijke relatie met de andere onderdelen van de buitenplaats;

Description of component 1: MAIN BUILDING.

The main building constructed in 1856, white-rendered on a rectangular ground plan, consists of a basement, two storeys and a gently sloping, continuous and truncated hipped roof, covered with tiles. Due to the slope of the terrain, the basement is barely visible in the front facade, but on the rear side appears as a low lower storey. The facades are articulated all around by Corinthian pilasters and drip mouldings and terminated by a cornice. Memorial stones on either side of the entrance commemorate the construction and subsequent alteration of the house. The front facade is five bays wide and symmetrical in design. In the projecting entrance bay, which is terminated by a pediment-like form, the front door is recessed within a portico. This is accessible via a step, flanked by lanterns. On the first floor a balcony has been installed, its balustrade decorated with a stag's head. The balcony is accessible via French doors. In the pediment-like termination is a semicircular window containing a clock face. The remaining windows originally contained sash windows with large mirror panes. These were replaced in the second half of the 20th century by six-pane and eight-pane windows in Empire style. A historically incorrect intervention, as the Empire period was already over at the time the house was built. All windows are fitted with jalousies. The side facades show a less regular window arrangement, with, in addition to windows, also blind openings. Against the left side facade is the remnant of what was originally a dome-shaped extension. The extension has been demolished down to basement level and fitted with a terrace. The interior is relatively austere, but both the layout and the finishing have been preserved in relatively good condition.

Valuation

The MAIN HOUSE is of importance:

- because of its age;

- as a representative and relatively well-preserved example from the oeuvre of Leeuwarden architect J.I. Douma;

- as a characteristic and relatively well-preserved example of a mid-19th-century rendered country house in neoclassical style;

- because of the relatively well-preserved ground plan, layout and interior finishing;

- because of its characteristic location within the 19th-century park layout;

- because of the functional and visual-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate;

- because of its image-defining location on the Koningin Julianaweg.
