Inleiding
De voormalige Roomskatholieke LAGERE SCHOOL te Woudsend is in 1923 gebouwd in een "vernieuwende" stijl die een aantal kenmerken heeft van de Amsterdamse School, met name qua materiaalgebruik en bouwvormen. De gevelsteen in de voorgevel vermeldt: "Me posuit G.V.ROGGEN Parochus MCMXXIII die IX apr.".
De school bevindt zich aan de noordzijde van het dorp tussen de Midstrjitte en de Iewal, op een rechthoekig terrein dat ingesloten is tussen de percelen Iewal 10 en Midstrjitte 47, 49 en 53. De school is naar het westen gericht en bereikbaar via een steeg die, vanaf een strak vormgegeven toegangshek, in oostelijke richting loopt tussen de percelen Midstrjitte 49 en 53, tot aan het pleintje vóór de school. De steeg en het pleintje worden omsloten door een MUUR met TOEGANGSHEK (zie aparte omschrijving), die tot aan Iewal loopt. Aan de achterkant grenst de school aan de percelen Iewal nr. 10 en nr. 12. De school is nu in gebruik als peuterspeelzaal.
Omschrijving
De school heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en wordt gedekt door een fors, ingesnoerd schilddak van zwarte geglazuurde Hollandse pannen met een lage en een hoge schoorsteen; de laatste met schoorsteenbord en vier rechthoekige rookgaten. Het pand is opgetrokken uit bruine baksteen.
De voorgevel is symmetrisch ingedeeld door de risalerende hoofdingang met aan weerszijden een drielicht/drieruitsvenster, een drieruitsvenster en een tweelicht/vijfruitsvenster. Alle openingen zijn van hoge rollagen en gemetselde lekdorpels voorzien. De hoofdingang bestaat uit een driedelig verspringend en in hoogte varierend middenrisaliet; elk der delen wordt door een platdak gedekt. In het centrale deel bevindt zich de dubbele houten voordeur die is omlijst door een even uitgemetseld 'tympaan' dat als het ware rust op vier smalle bovenlichten en twee dito zijlichten. Boven de deur zitten vier kleine ventilatie-openingen. De ingang wordt geflankeerd door twee lage muurtjes met ezelsrug; ervoor ligt een gemetselde stoep.
In de zuidelijke zijgevel zit een smal, verticaal venster. In de achtergevel zijn zes grote vensters geplaatst, die symmetrisch in twee groepen zijn verdeeld, volgens de ligging van de zich erachter bevindende klaslokalen. Ieder venster bestaat uit een H-venster met zesruits bovenlicht. In een inham in de achtergevel zijn een venster en een houten deur geplaatst. Het INTERIEUR is in zeer grote mate nog origineel, zowel qua indeling als qua aanwezigheid van oorspronkelijke inrichtingselementen. De gang is vanaf de vierkante hal te betreden. Aan de ingangszijde liggen de kleinere ruimtes, aan de andere kant twee ruime klaslokalen. De vloer is over de gehele plattegrond belegd met bruin-grijze tegels. Langs de wanden van de hal en de gang loopt een lambrisering die -van onder naar boven- bestaat uit een streklaag van roodgeglazuurde baksteen, gele baksteen tot ongeveer één meter hoogte en een streklaag van gele baksteen. De houten deuren zijn alle nog origineel. De grote, dubbele tienruits deur die vanaf de hal toegang geeft tot de gang heeft in het midden een geribbelde houten stijl; aan weerszijden van deze deur zijn vier paneeldeuren met achtruits bovenlicht, waarachter zich de kleinere vertrekken (toiletten en opslagruimtes) bevinden. De twee paneeldeuren naar de lokalen hebben een achtruits bovendeel. In de wanden tussen gang en lokalen zijn twee zesruitsvensters geplaatst. De deuren hebben omlijstingen van gele baksteen. In de lokalen hebben de vensters en deuren een geometrische houten omlijsting. De plafonds van de lokalen zijn verlaagd: de originele plafonds zijn echter nog aanwezig. Achterin de gang scheidt een boog de gang van een kleine hal. Hier bevinden zich de deuren naar de lerarenkamer en naar de zolder, die via een houten trap te bereiken is. In de lerarenkamer zijn twee originele kasten met paneeldeuren en geometrische houten omlijsting. Tussen de deuren staat de schoorsteen met een schouw van kleine groene tegels. De houten lambrisering, even hoog als de schoorsteenmantel, bestaat uit stroken met een ezelsrug-achtige doorlopende bovenlijst.
Waardering
De voormalige Roomskatholieke Lagere School aan de Midstrjitte 45 te Woudsend is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang:
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een maatschappelijke ontwikkeling;
- vanwege de toegepaste Amsterdamse school-stijlkenmerken, die het gebouw tot een bijzondere verschijning maken binnen een in architectonisch opzicht vrij traditioneel dorpsbeeld;
- vanwege de esthetische en architectonische kwaliteit van het ontwerp;

The former Roman Catholic ELEMENTARY SCHOOL at Woudsend was built in 1923 in a "progressive" style which has a number of characteristics of the Amsterdam School, particularly as regards material use and building forms. The foundation stone in the front facade states: "Me posuit G.V.ROGGEN Parochus MCMXXIII die IX apr.".
The school is situated on the northern side of the village between the Midstrjitte and the Iewal, on a rectangular site enclosed between the plots Iewal 10 and Midstrjitte 47, 49 and 53. The school faces west and is reached via an alley which, from a strictly designed gateway, runs in an easterly direction between the plots Midstrjitte 49 and 53, to the small square in front of the school. The alley and the square are enclosed by a WALL with GATEWAY (see separate description), which extends to Iewal. At the rear the school borders on the plots Iewal no. 10 and no. 12. The school is now in use as a nursery playgroup.
Description
The school has a rectangular floor plan and is covered by a substantial, tapered hipped roof of black glazed Dutch tiles with a low and a tall chimney; the latter with chimney board and four rectangular smoke holes. The building is constructed of brown brick.
The front facade is symmetrically arranged by the projecting main entrance with on either side a three-light/three-pane window, a three-pane window and a two-light/five-pane window. All openings are provided with tall brick relieving arches and mortared drip moulds. The main entrance consists of a three-part projecting and varying in height central risalit; each part is covered by a flat roof. In the central part is the double wooden front door which is framed by an equally mortared 'tympanum' which appears to rest on four narrow fanlights and two similar side lights. Above the door are four small ventilation openings. The entrance is flanked by two low walls with coping; in front of it lies a mortared step.
In the southern side facade is a narrow, vertical window. In the rear facade are six large windows, symmetrically arranged in two groups, according to the location of the classrooms behind them. Each window consists of an H-window with six-pane fanlight. In a recess in the rear facade are a window and a wooden door. The INTERIOR is to a very large extent still original, both as regards layout and the presence of original furnishing elements. The corridor is accessed from the square hall. At the entrance side are the smaller rooms, on the other side two spacious classrooms. The floor is laid throughout with brown-grey tiles. Along the walls of the hall and corridor runs a wainscoting which consists -from bottom to top- of a course of red-glazed brick, yellow brick to approximately one metre height and a course of yellow brick. The wooden doors are all still original. The large, double ten-pane door which gives access from the hall to the corridor has in the middle a ribbed wooden post; on either side of this door are four panel doors with eight-pane fanlights, behind which are the smaller rooms (toilets and storage spaces). The two panel doors to the classrooms have an eight-pane upper section. In the walls between corridor and classrooms are two six-pane windows. The doors have surrounds of yellow brick. In the classrooms the windows and doors have a geometric wooden surround. The ceilings of the classrooms are lowered: the original ceilings are however still present. At the rear of the corridor an arch separates the corridor from a small hall. Here are the doors to the staff room and to the attic, which is reached via a wooden staircase. In the staff room are two original cupboards with panel doors and geometric wooden surrounds. Between the doors is the fireplace with a surround of small green tiles. The wooden wainscoting, as tall as the chimney breast, consists of strips with a coping-like continuous upper moulding.
Valuation
The former Roman Catholic Elementary School at Midstrjitte 45 at Woudsend is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:
- as a special expression of a social development;
- on account of the applied Amsterdam School style characteristics, which make the building a special feature within a village streetscape that is relatively traditional in architectural terms;
- on account of the aesthetic and architectural quality of the design;
- on account of the material and ornamentation;
- on account of the clear coherence between exterior and interior elements;
- on account of the, for this type of building, meanwhile rare architectural integrity of both exterior and interior;
- on account of the typological and functional rarity at least at provincial level.
