Inleiding

Introduction

St. Petrus Church executed in the traditionalist manner of the Delft School with a high front tower. On 23 April 1935 the first stone of the three-aisle, Roman Catholic BASILICA was laid by dean A.H.M.J. Homulle. The building owner of the church was vicar Th. Beukers, the firm Bik and Breedeveld the contractor. Architect A.J. Kropholler also designed a large part of the furnishings. On 10 March 1936 the church was consecrated and put into use. During the consecration the relics of St. Petrus and of SS. Fortunatus and Placidus were mortared into a cavity of the high altar table according to early Christian practice. The relics came from the St. Petrus Church at the langebrug which burned down in 1933.

The ground plan of the Petrus Church is the result of Kropholler's idea that a church should be short and broad rather than narrow and long. In a broad church the faithful have the best view of the Holy Acts and can best hear the spoken word. Kropholler regarded the choir as the most important component of the church. Much light should fall there and no column should obstruct the view towards the choir. That is why the four large columns in the Petrus Church are placed as far outboard as possible. The side aisles serve as gangways and for the placement of confessionals. The moderate height of the space and the wooden roof structure also serve to ensure good acoustics. In the architectural design of both exterior and interior it is evident that the church is a textbook example of Kropholler's principles. He believed that contemporary architecture should align with old indigenous church building, through the use of, among other things, pointed arches, the basilica form and the bell tower. From an economic standpoint, an architect should in his view omit what can be missed and in that context execute walls stoutly so that they simultaneously form a component of the structure. The sturdy walls also ensure a clear distinction between outside and inside and a feeling of warmth. Through the use of fine natural materials, expensive paintings and deceptive elements such as false joints can be avoided. In the first years the interior of the church was not yet completed. The floor consisted of bare concrete, statues and a stations of the cross were missing. The five original bells were stolen by the Germans in February 1943. In 1947 the bells were replaced by five new bells on the occasion of the silver jubilee of vicar Beukers's pastorate. In 1960 the small tower with the weathervane on the priest's choir was removed due to poor structural condition. The windows were to have been filled with stained glass at a later stage. Due to budget constraints not all clear glass was replaced. Only in the choir and in the side chapels was glass-in-lead later added. In 1958 the chapel of St. Liduina was added to the south side of the church. The foundations had already been laid during the construction of the church. The chapel was built by architects Van Oerle and Schrama in consultation with Kropholler. The sacristy was converted into a daily chapel in 1968. In 1964 a second altar was placed in front of the high altar in connection with changed liturgical views. This second altar was removed when the high altar was moved in 1990 from the apse to the nave. With the relocation the central part of the tomb was removed, creating a table model. The pews were placed around the altar. The communion rails now partly serve to demarcate the space around the altar. Other components of the communion rails were used for a side altar for the Holy Sacrament in the apse. At the back of the church (west) the porch with choir gallery was extended with the help of redundant pews and glass. The font was moved to the central axis of the nave, midway between the altar and choir gallery. Also in the field of the visual arts and decorative arts many elements were relocated, removed or added. For example, the tabernacle was regilded in 1975 and provided with a network of ribs.

Description

The St. Petrus Church, a basilica, is built of Ouderzorgsteen under a bent gabled roof with red Dutch tiles and a wooden drip moulding above the walls. The side aisles on the west side are one bay shorter than the nave and covered by identical gabled roofs. The ends of the roofs are provided with spout gables. Heavy diagonal buttresses in two stages both at the corners of the nave and of the side aisles. The clerestory windows of the nave and the long facades of the side aisles are articulated by three-light windows under pointed arches. In the other facades windows under pointed arches. The coping stones of the facades and the chamfer stones and setting stones at the façade openings are executed in Lärchen tuff stone. High up in the facades horizontal lines formed by relief in the brickwork bond.

Before the front facade (west) a heavy, square tower, which is crowned by a high, curved spire with slates in Maasdecker bond with a wrought iron cross on top. In each facade of the tower a sound hole and a clock face. In the front facade of the tower (west) the main entrance in a pointed arch-shaped portal with bevelled corners under trompes of tuff stone. Above three granite steps one enters the church through a double arched clamped wooden door with large cast iron cross hinges and peephole windows with decorative ironwork. In the side facades of the tower entrances with sidelights.

In the corners of the side aisles and the nave on the west side are diagonal entrance compartments, which in design are identical to the main entrance in the tower. Against the long facades of the side aisles various extensions of chapels and confessional spaces. A three-sided apse on the east side of the nave, a three-sided chapel as the closure of the southern side aisle. Before the church a boundary fence consisting of a wall of red brick with saddle backs and heavy plinths.

Interior

The three aisles of the interior are separated by compressed pointed arches on columns of light Norwegian granite with cubic capitals. The walls are built of calcium silicate brick, with panelling of glazed brick in the same tone. Compressed pointed arches above the openings to the chapels. Above the doors of the confessionals straight light granite lintels and lintels with herringbone arches. The arches in the interior are provided with roll mouldings with five rows of stops. Under the gabled roofs beam ceilings of reddish-brown Oregon pine wood. The cross beams of the ceilings rest on wooden consoles. On the floor various types of marble and travertine are laid in patterns. In the middle of the nave for example a white marble dove with olive branch. On the north side of the church is the baptismal chapel. The floor of the baptismal chapel is several steps lower than the adjacent side aisle. In the baptismal chapel glass-in-lead by Frans Balendong. Of the original church furnishings and works of art the following are preserved among others: the tabernacle, crowned with a royal crown and provided with depictions of a pelican and fish with bread basket; the high altar of Greek marble; a standing sanctuary lamp of amber onyx; the rails of the epistle and gospel pulpits by Kropholler; the chandeliers by Kropholler; painted stations of the cross by Pieter Geraedts; the glass-in-lead windows in the apse with Peter and Paul by Han Bijvoet from 1938; the tile tableau of St. Antonius by Felix Timmermans from 1938; the remains of the communion rails in white, purple and black marble; the six metre high cross with the Saviour by Gerhard Janssen; statues of Mary Holy Virgin and Child (Albert Termote), St. Theresia (dom. Van der Meij), Pope Pius X, Sacred Heart (dom. Van der Meij).

Valuation

The St. Petrus Church from 1934-36 is of general importance for its cultural historical value as an expression of the Catholic parish district idea and because of the dominant place the church occupies in the development of the interwar residential district. From an architectural history perspective the church is of general importance because of its design in the building style of the Delft School and as a characteristic example in the oeuvre of A.J. Kropholler. From an urban planning perspective the church is significant because of the functional and spatial relationship with the vicarage and terraced houses and the distinctive location in the heart of the complex, as well as because of the silhouette value of the tower. The exterior is intact, the interior is preserved to a large extent in good condition.
