The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The heliometer building (OBSERVATORY) was designed by Petrus J.H. Cuypers (1827-1921) in 1877 and completed in 1878. The 'Zunderman dome' was designed in an Eclectic architectural style, which is related to the Neo-Dutch Renaissance. The apparatus in the tower-shaped heliometer building was originally installed in a cylinder with conical termination. This top has since been replaced by a dome. An instrument from 1947 is currently installed in the dome.

Description

The heliometer building is constructed in red brick over two storeys on an octagonal plan. On this tower-shaped base stands an iron dome. The masonry plinth is covered by a sandstone moulding. Solid sash windows with sandstone water drip mouldings, glazing bars and fanlights. Along the top edge of the facades decorative brickwork in a contrasting colour. The entrance is located on the south side in a slightly projecting side of the octagon. The double panel door terminates in a rounded arch. Around the door sandstone decorative blocks.

Around the dome stands a simple fence. The dome was manufactured from riveted iron plates. The dome can rotate and part of it can slide open, allowing the instruments to be pushed out.

Interior

In the heliometer building the following have been preserved among other things: The sandstone staircase with wooden treads and an iron handrail around a masonry octagonal pillar with ornamental wall anchors. The pillar extends from the ground floor into the dome and serves to support the instruments. In the dome furthermore a wooden floor, wooden balustrade, the controls for the rotation system of the dome and the controls to open the dome. Below this space an intermediate floor is supported on sandstone corbels.

Valuation

The heliometer building is of general importance owing to its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value due to the role it has played within the Observatory complex in education and in the socio-economic and historical development of Leiden as well as owing to its design in an Eclectic architectural style with elements from the Neo-Dutch Renaissance. The building is moreover a typologically exceptional example in the oeuvre of P.J.H. Cuypers. The heliometer building is visually dominant, located on the former bastion, next to the Hortus Botanicus. Moreover it has high ensemble value owing to the spatial and functional relationship with the other buildings of the Observatory complex.

The exterior and interior of the building are virtually intact.
