Inleiding
De kleine meetkoepel (OBSERVATORIUM) is ontworpen in een Eclectische bouwstijl met elementen uit de Chaletstijl, daterend rond 1900-1905. Het meetkoepeltje had een schuifdak, waardoor met een kijker gecontroleerd kon worden of de grote kijker van het hoofdgebouw goed in het zenith stond. Het schuifdak is inmiddels vastgezet.
Omschrijving
De kleine meetkoepel is op een rechthoekige plattegrond in rode baksteen over één bouwlaag opgetrokken onder een zadeldak met flauwe hellingen. Onder de dakrand rondom een aan de onderkant gelobd gevelbeschot. De gemetselde plint wordt afgedekt door een hardstenen deklijst. In de gevels gele baksteen op de hoeken en speklagen van gele baksteen. In de westelijke eindgevel een rechtgesloten houten deuren. In de andere drie gevels vensters boven waterdorpels met geglazuurde bakstenen.
Waardering
De kleine meetkoepel is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de rol die het binnen het Sterrenwacht-complex heeft gespeeld in het onderwijs en in de sociaal-economische en historische ontwikkeling van Leiden alsmede wegens het ontwerp in een Eclectische bouwstijl met elementen uit de Chaletstijl. De meetkoepel heeft een hoge ensemblewaarde vanwege de ruimtelijke en functionele relatie met de andere gebouwen van het Sterrenwacht-complex. Het exterieur en interieur van het pand zijn vrijwel gaaf.

The small measuring dome (OBSERVATORY) was designed in an Eclectic architectural style with elements from the Chalet style, dating around 1900-1905. Description
The small measuring dome is constructed on a rectangular plan in red brick over one storey under a gabled roof with gentle slopes. Under the roof edge all around a roof board with lobed edges at the underside. The masonry plinth is covered by a sandstone coping. In the facades yellow brick on the corners and yellow brick banding. In the western end facade a solid wooden door. In the other three facades windows above water drip mouldings with glazed brick.
Valuation
The small measuring dome is of general importance owing to its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value due to the role it has played within the Observatory complex in education and in the socio-economic and historical development of Leiden as well as owing to its design in an Eclectic architectural style with elements from the Chalet style.
