Inleiding
In 1889 en 1890 gebouwde STOOMDRUKKERIJ met bijbehorende winkel. De drukkerij (1889) zowel als de winkel (1890) zijn gebouwd in opdracht van Eduard IJdo naar ontwerp van architect D. Veilbrief. De meest representatieve gevel van de drukkerij is opgetrokken in een nauw aan de Neo-Hollandse Renaissance verwante, destijds zeer gangbare bouwstijl. De overige gevels hebben geen bijzondere stylistische kenmerken. De met de voorgevel op het water (Oude Rijn) georiënteerde drukkerij maakt deel uit van het beschermde stadsgezicht.
Omschrijving
Vanuit een L-vormige plattegrond opgetrokken, min of meer complexmatig geheel met de winkel-woning. Op de Oude Rijn georiënteerde, als het ware uit het water oprijzende gevel van een drie bouwlagen tellend bedrijfsgedeelte onder met bouletpannen gedekte samengestelde kap (mansarde-, zadel- en gebroken zadeldak). Drie-assige symmetrische gevel met hoger opgaande middenpartij, opgetrokken in met gepleisterde baksteen geaccentueerde machinale baksteen. Baksteendecoraties in de boogtrommels boven de gevelopeningen onder segmentbogen.
Gepleisterde cordonlijst tussen eerste en tweede bouwlaag met de tekst "BOEK- KANTOOR- EN HANDELSDRUKKERIJ EDUARD IJDO" in verdiept aangebrachte letters. Smeedijzeren muurankers aan weerszijden van de vensterbogen in de risalerende zijtraveeën.
Alle vensters identiek, rechtgesloten, met schuiframen en doorgetrokken, geprofileerde onderdorpels en aanzetstenen en sluitstenen met diamantkoppen in de segmentbogen. Iets bredere middentravee met in de eerste bouwlaag een niet meer originele invulling in de gevelopenening waar oorspronkelijk de laaddeuren zaten. Tweede en derde bouwlaag met twee vensters, elk onder een halve segmentboog. Deze vormen samen een segmentboogvormige overspanningsboog met aanzetstenen en een sluitsteen boven de smalle bakstenen penant. Horizontale gevelbeëindigingen met links "OPGERICHT" en rechts "ANNO 1889" in gepleisterde velden tussen geprofileerde lijstdelen. Vierde bouwlaag van de middenpartij in de vorm van een onder zadeldak staande lucarne met trapgevel, voorzien van geprofileerde deklijsten, op kraagsteen rustende, overhoekse tenant (met restant van een ijzeren bekroning) en twee vensters als die in de tweede en de derde bouwlaag, maar met een iets bredere penant. Linker zijgevel met staafankers en rechtgesloten vensters onder rollaag. Rechter zijgevel grotendeels aan het oog onttrokken door in het interbellum gebouwd woonhuis.
Achtergevel (Koppenhinksteeg) - in het verlengde van de rechter zijgevel van het winkelpand, maar iets hoger opgaand - met rechtgesloten gevelopeningen onder strek.
Waardering
De stoomdrukkerij is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde.
De drukkerij en de bijbehorende winkel zijn van cultuurhistorische waarde als representatief overblijfsel van een (destijds) belangrijke bedrijvigheid in Leiden.
Het complexje heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de detaillering en het materiaalgebruik van de voor de bouwtijd zeer karakteristieke voorgevels.

A STEAM PRINTING WORKS with attached shop built in 1889 and 1890. The printing works (1889) as well as the shop (1890) were built on the instructions of Eduard IJdo according to designs by architect D. Veilbrief. Description
Constructed from an L-shaped ground plan, a somewhat complex whole together with the shop-dwelling. A facade oriented towards the Oude Rijn, rising as it were from the water, of a business section comprising three storeys under a composite roof covered with rounded tiles (mansard, gabled and broken saddle roof). Three-bay symmetrical facade with a higher central section, constructed in mechanical brick accentuated with rendered brick. Brick decorations in the arch soffits above the facade openings under segment arches.
Rendered string course between the first and second storey with the text "BOEK- KANTOOR- EN HANDELSDRUKKERIJ EDUARD IJDO" in recessed letters. Wrought-iron wall anchors at either side of the window arches in the projecting side bays.
All windows identical, square-headed, with sash windows and continuous, moulded sills and voussoirs with diamond points in the segment arches. Slightly wider middle bay with in the first storey a no longer original infill in the facade opening where the loading doors originally stood. Second and third storeys with two windows each, each under a half segment arch. These together form a segment-arch-shaped spanning arch with voussoirs and a keystone above the narrow brick pier. Horizontal facade terminations with on the left "OPGERICHT" and on the right "ANNO 1889" in rendered fields between moulded string courses. Fourth storey of the central section in the form of a dormer under a saddle roof, provided with moulded skirting pieces, resting on a corbel, corner tenon (with remnant of an iron cresting) and two windows as those in the second and third storeys, but with a slightly wider pier. Left side facade with fluted quoins and square-headed windows under a roll moulding. Right side facade largely hidden from view by a dwelling house built in the interwar period.
Rear facade (Koppenhinksteeg) - in the extension of the right side facade of the shop building, but rising somewhat higher - with square-headed facade openings under a stretcher course.
Valuation
The steam printing works is of general interest on account of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value.
The printing works and the associated shop are of cultural-historical value as a representative remnant of an (at the time) important business activity in Leiden.
