Inleiding
In 1860-1861 als BEHEERDERSWONING in opdracht van de Maatschappij 'Tot Nut van 't Algemeen' van het gymnastiekschoolcomplex gebouwd woonhuis in eclectische trant. Het behoorde aanvankelijk bij de ernaast staande gymnastiekschool (Pieterskerkgracht 7). De ontwerper van het pand was de latere gemeente-architect J.W. Schaap.
Omschrijving
Vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond opgebouwd, onderkelderd pand met twee bouwlagen onder een dwars met hollandse pannen gedekt zadeldak en platte dakdelen. De symmetrische, vijf traveeën brede voorgevel is opgetrokken in schone en gepleisterde baksteen. De gepleisterde geveldelen omlijsten de gevelopeningen. Brede middenpartij met entree. Aan weerszijden van een op hardstenen neut staande bewerkte houten middenstijl een originele deur met hardstenen drempel en gevlochten gietijzeren raamroosters en handgreep. Beide deuren onder segmentboogvormig bovenlicht en eveneens segmentboogvormige overspan- ningsboog. Schijnvoegen in de gepleisterde ingangsomlijsting. Aan weerszijden twee getoogde vensters met achtruits schuiframen en grijze geprofileerde onderdorpels onder strekse boog met sluit- en aanzetstenen van gepleisterde baksteen. Verkropte cordonlijst, gewelfd boven de entree, geprofileerd op de lisenen. Rechtgesloten verdiepingvensters met geprofileerde onderdorpels en openslaande zesruits ramen onder strek met sluitsteen. Geprofileerde liseenbekroning verbonden met eveneens geprofileerde vensteromlijsting met afgeronde hoeken. Gevelbeëindiging in de vorm van een houten kroonlijst met schouderbogen in het fries, een geprofileerde daklijst en een steekkapje met fronton boven een keperboog en geprofileerde rondnis als bekroning van de middentravee.
Waardering
Uit 1860-61 daterende beheerderswoning van het gymnastiekschoolcomplex van algemeen belang wegens cultuur- en architectuurhistorische alsook typologische waarde als vroeg en uitwendig gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een dienstwoning ten behoeve van specifiek onderwijs uitgevoerd in een rijk gedetailleerde eclectische trant. Tevens is het woonhuis van belang wegens historisch-functionele en ensemblewaarde in relatie met het naburige gymnastiekgebouw alsook als representatief werk in het oevre van J.W. Schaap.

In 1860-1861 built as a CARETAKER'S DWELLING on commission of the society 'Tot Nut van 't Algemeen' for the gymnasium school complex, a residential house in eclectic style. It originally belonged with the adjoining gymnasium school (Pieterskerkgracht 7). The designer of the building was the later municipal architect J.W. Schaap.
Description
Built from a rectangular floor plan, a building with basement and two storeys under a mansard roof clad crosswise with Dutch tiles and flat roof sections. The symmetrical, five-bay wide front facade is constructed in fair-faced and rendered brick. The rendered facade sections frame the facade openings. Broad central section with entrance. On either side of a worked timber mullion standing on a hardstone newel, an original door with hardstone threshold and plaited cast-iron window grilles and handle. Both doors under segmental arch fanlights and likewise segmental arch spanning arch. False joints in the rendered entrance surround. On either side two arched windows with back-piece sash frames and grey profiled sills under flat arch with closing and setting stones of rendered brick. Stepped cornice string course, curved above the entrance, profiled on the pilaster strips. Straight-topped upper-storey windows with profiled sills and opening six-pane frames under flat arch with keystone. Profiled pilaster-strip moulding connected with likewise profiled window surround with rounded corners. Facade termination in the form of a timber cornice with shoulder arches in the frieze, a profiled drip moulding and a small gable with pediment above a herringbone arch and profiled rounded moulding as the crowning of the central bay.
Valuation
A caretaker's dwelling dating from 1860-61 of the gymnasium school complex of general significance due to cultural-historical and architectural as well as typological value as an early and externally well-preserved example of a service dwelling for specific education executed in richly detailed eclectic style. The residential house is furthermore of significance due to historical-functional and ensemble value in relation to the neighbouring gymnasium building as well as being a representative work in the oeuvre of J.W. Schaap.
