Inleiding

Introduction

PARSONAGE of the Roman Catholic church complex St. Laurentiuskerk. The parsonage (2) was built shortly after the completion of the church in 1870 to an Eclectic design by architect Th. Asseler by contractor J. Torken from Boskoop. The building replaces the parsonage at the former hidden church, which was demolished in 1871. In the 1920s (after 1924) the glazing bars of the windows were partly simplified and the fanlights were provided with stained glass, such as also occurs in the sash doors of the connecting suite room.

What is particularly striking in the interior are the heavy stucco ceilings in Neo-Baroque and Neo-Gothic style on the ground floor. An internal renovation from the 1970s, which primarily concerns the first floor and the kitchen, makes these components of subordinate importance for protection.

Description

Partially cellared parsonage, consisting of two storeys, has a symmetrically arranged rectangular building mass under a flattened gabled roof, covered with glazed flat Frisian tiles and chimneys on both sides. The facades are constructed of grey brick in finely jointed cross bond and have segmental arches above doors and windows. Plinth and step treads are of ashlar. The front and rear facades are five window units wide. The front facade (north-west) is a cornice-topped facade, provided with pilasters on the gable corners and on either side of the central projection, which are rusticated on the ground floor. Yellow decorative brickwork occurs in the toothband course at the top of the spandrels and the recessed cross motif on the pilasters between them. The corner pilasters and central projection have plastered string courses between the ground floor and the floor above. The decoration of the corniced main cornice consists per window unit of a circular motif. The entrance door in the central projection is a panelled door, provided with a grilled transom, with above the corbelled-supported canopy a segmental fanlight, provided with V-shaped glazing bars. The windows are predominantly sash windows with two-light segmental-arched fanlights provided with stained glass. The rear facade has several two-light, double-opening windows with two-light segmental-arched fanlights. The window sills on the upper floor rest on corbels. To the right of the front facade, set back slightly in the connecting section to the church, is a second panelled door with segmental soffit and circular glazing bars in the fanlight. The central projection is accentuated by a wooden roof dormer, provided with double-opening four-light doors, with volute-shaped sides and triangular pediment. The rear facade (south-east), albeit simpler in design, has on the ground floor a similar arrangement to the front facade. Within the original door frame with segmental soffit is a renewed door. On the upper floor three windows are evenly distributed across the facade. The single-storey connecting section with flat roof on the left also has an entrance. The left (north-east) side facade has on the upper floor one window.

In the interior noteworthy are, among other things, the richly executed Eclectic stucco ceilings in Neo-Gothic and Neo-Baroque style, which occur among others in the hall and the connecting suite room. Draught door with etched glass.

Valuation

The parsonage of St. Laurentiuskerk is of general cultural-historical importance as a representative example from the boom in Catholic Neo-Gothic church building after the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853.

The parsonage is of general architectural-historical importance because of the Eclectic building style from the third quarter of the 19th century and as part of an important Roman Catholic complex from the oeuvre of architect Th. Asseler, which moreover represents an important current in the development of Roman Catholic architecture in the Netherlands. The parsonage is relatively intact in main form, material use and detailing, both externally and internally.

The parsonage is visually distinctive situated on the Leidseweg, just outside the centre of Voorschoten. It possesses through its free location and through the mutual spatial and functional coherence with the other complex components high ensemble value.
