Inleiding

Introduction

CHURCH of the Dutch Reformed Parish built in 1912 in Neo-Romanesque style according to a design by architect J.F.L. Fourring. The church is located in the former municipality of de Groote Lindt, a hamlet near the Lindtsedijk, to the southwest of the centre of Zwijndrecht. The church is situated at the intersection of the Develweg and the Hyacintstraat and is surrounded by a residential district dating from after 1945.

The church was built on the foundations of an earlier church from 1863 which burnt down at the beginning of the 20th century. Directly next to the church lies the parsonage, which dates from the second half of the nineteenth century. In the front garden stands a fine beech tree which also graces the square in front of the church. The church building stands at considerable distance from the Develweg so that a square has been created at the front.

Along the right gable wall there is a broad border with shrubland (shrubberies), and next to it a parking area.

N.B. In 1960 the old vestry at the rear gable wall (east) was demolished and replaced by a new one. Along the northern side gable, the church was extended in 1989, whereby the original church gable was preserved. Both the vestry and the accommodation space are single-storey and fall outside the protection.

Description

The church is constructed on a rectangular, three-aisle ground plan beneath a gabled roof covered with slates in Maas style. The left roof slope is extended and covers a broader side aisle. Against the front gable wall (west) stands a square bell tower with a pyramidal roof, likewise covered with slates.

The gables are constructed in dark brick and have projecting plinths. The window arrangements are three-part and consist of three narrow round-arched windows of which the middle one is somewhat taller. The drip mouldings are of grès tiles. The roof truss structure is of pine and spruce wood and has no roof windows.

At the base of the tower is the main entrance which consists of double wooden doors placed in a round-arched window frame with a moulded surround in rustica, natural stone corner stones. Hardstone threshold and step. Above the doors is a window arrangement with three round-arched windows.

In the right tower gable wall (south) two narrow, straight-topped small windows. At the top of the western and in the southern tower gable a recessed gable panel with three round-arched sound holes and a clock face.

In the side gables the brickwork is enlivened across the entire gable wall with moulded string courses of yellow brick at the level of the setbacks and just below the curve of the windows. The uppermost string course has a small tooth moulding on the underside. The lowest string course has an additional upper line.

The right side gable is divided by means of stepped pilasters into three bays. In the middle gable panel a four-part window arrangement of which the two inner windows are taller. These windows are blind as are the lower part of the two outer windows.

The left side gable (north) has become an interior wall due to the extension. On the ground floor and on the upper storey there are five double half-arched windows.

The rear gable wall (east) has a window arrangement with six narrow round-arched windows which increase in height in steps. The rest of the gable is plastered over. At the top brick mosaic with yellow bricks.

Interior

The original layout and detailing of the church nave interior are virtually intact. In particular the wooden galleries, the bench plan with heating system and the painted decorations are worthy of protection. In the left aisle, three wooden galleries are placed along the entire depth of the church nave between moulded pillars. The pillars have natural stone corner stones and arched arches with above them a frieze of ornamental brickwork with facing brick. The open roof truss structure has along the edges of the roof boarding original painted decoration of stylised plant motifs. Three rows of benches are arranged on the balconies. In the original outer gable half-arched windows with leaded glass in the outer windows. The entrance vestibule has blue natural stone tiles on the floor. In the middle along the south gable wall a wooden pulpit on a square base. In the pulpit the four evangelists are painted. On either side leaded glass windows. The organ case, made by J. van Gelder in 1884, is not of value from the point of view of monument care. The organ (pipe organ by A. Standaart from Rotterdam) dates from the construction period and is not of value from the point of view of monument care.

Valuation

The church is of general interest because of its architectural and cultural-historical value as a representative example of an early twentieth-century church in Neo-Romanesque building style with an intact interior. The church is a reminder of the existence of the former village of Groote Lindt which was subsequently annexed by Zwijndrecht.

The structural components are intact in main form, material use and detailing, in particular the interior, of which the leaded glass, the galleries and the bench plan with heating system and the colourful finishing are most valuable.

The church is of urban-planning importance because of its prominent location on the Develweg, the adjoining parsonage and the square with trees.
