Omschrijving onderdeel 2

Waardering

PARKAANLEG van algemeen belang

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de gaaf bewaard gebleven structuur van de aanleg en de daarmee samenhangende onderdelen, zoals muren, poorten, hekken en andere tuinelementen;

- vanwege de landschappelijk-visuele, cultuur- en tuinhistorische waarden van -met name - het oude geboomte in het wandelparkje;

- vanwege de samenhang van de samenstellende onderdelen.

Description of component 2

PARK LAYOUT, originally 18th century; the modest (in comparison to the castle) park layout is situated on the terrain between the broad moat and the outer moat, and consists of the area of the former kitchen garden and a walk with old trees and winding paths. The outer moat connects to the southwest point of the inner moat and runs at right angles around the park and kitchen garden and ends at the outermost northeast point of the kitchen garden; formerly the moat ran through to around the farmhouse and presumably connected again with the inner moat at the gate at the end of the drive; the wooded walk lies south of the castle and from the castle court there is a fine view of the layout with monumental trees, including red beech, plane tree, lime and oak; many of these trees date from the time of the creation of the landscape park (around 1825); the layout is based on a geometric 18th-century layout, of which a round basin (see under 7c) and the foundations of an ice house and a pavilion (see under 7b and 7a) remain; the basin lies in the axis of the bridge (see under 4) and the gate in the north wing. The elongated terrain of the former kitchen garden lies between both eastern moat arms and was divided in two in the 19th century by an additional garden wall in marl (see under 5); the older and more northerly located wall closes off the kitchen garden terrain on the north side; through the entire kitchen garden runs a longitudinal axis, marked by two gates in the mentioned walls; the current arrangement of the kitchen garden sections is contemporary and partly in use as a farmyard; this arrangement represents no monumental value. Besides the two mentioned axes, which are not quite parallel, there is a third important sightline, namely the axis which runs from the entrance door in the castle over the court and the moat to the east; this axis is perpendicular to the axis in the kitchen garden and is marked in the terrace wall by an iron balcony railing (see under 7d). This sightline extends across the garden and thus incorporates the adjoining meadows into the park. The short drive with gravel surfacing is planted with a few rows of limes. The terrain southwest of the castle, partly meadow, partly orchard, belongs from of old to the Genhoes. The simple arrangement accentuates the monumentality of successively the lime-planted drive, the gate and the castle and thereby supports the climax effect of this representative axis.

Valuation

PARK LAYOUT of general importance

- because of its age;

- because of the well-preserved structure of the layout and the associated components, such as walls, gates, railings and other garden elements;

- because of the landscape-visual, cultural and garden-historical values of - in particular - the old trees in the wooded walk;

- because of the coherence of the constituent components.
