Inleiding

Introduction

Head-tail FARMHOUSE, built in 1879 on the site of an older farmhouse. The founders of the farmhouse came from North Holland and brought with them this building type, which was then unusual for the province of Utrecht. The farmhouse was constructed as lightly as possible in view of the ground conditions. Thus the anchors in the side facade of the front house are not located at the points of the beam layers but are attached to wooden posts just behind the half-brick wall. The ground around the farmhouse has subsided, making an extra step for the main entrance necessary. To the left of the farmhouse stands a double workers' house, also with North Holland characteristics, of a slightly later date.

Description

The farmhouse of the head-tail type, set at right angles to the Industrieweg, has a stone front house under a gabled roof covered with interlocking improved Dutch tiles. The larger rear house, the business part, is covered by a thatch-covered three-sided hipped roof. Below the thatched roof is a layer three tiles high. The chimney is located in the ridge of the roof.

The front house has a symmetrical front facade with a door and two sash windows on either side. In the gable are two windows. The left side facade contains a pair of low cellar windows, a sash window, a door and a recent window. The right side facade contains a sash window and a later added, wider window with two casement windows as fanlights.

The rear house has a central axis that lies to the right of that of the front house. Only the left or east facade and the lower part of the short north facade to the left of the front house are built in brick; the others are of green-painted wood on a stone basement. The side facades have cast-iron stable windows. To the left of the front house is a stone with the text: 'The foundation stone laid by A. Mars 31 July 1879'. To the right of the front house wooden entrance doors are fitted. Against the right side facade a wooden extension was set in 1930 which housed the milking facility. Against the rear facade a cookhouse is placed under a tile-covered lean-to roof. On the left, the facade in a slightly recessed section contains large double wooden entrance doors.

Against the left side facade is a wooden scrubbing room set under a lean-to roof.

Internally the business section consists of three aisles. The left aisle is fitted out as a cattle shed and separated by wooden parts. Above it is the hayloft. The middle aisle spans the full height and served as a hay storage. At the rear is the horse stable with wooden panelling. The right aisle serves as a side section and forms a so-called side lengthways section; this is served by the front and rear entrance doors. There are four tie-beam trusses with double corbels.

Valuation

The farmhouse is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value as a remarkable example of a head-tail farmhouse in this region, as well as because of its ensemble value in relation to the adjacent double workers' house.
