Inleiding
TUINHUIS, achter het "Walter Maashuis" (voorheen "Gaudeaumus"), dat in 1924 naar ontwerp van architect Frants E. Röntgen is gebouwd (rijksmonumentnummer 358914), werd in 1928 voor de componist J. Röntgen sr. als een 'componeerhuisje' gebouwd. Het ontwerp van dit huisje is eveneens van zijn zoon F.E. Röntgen. Het huisje is tot aan zijn dood in 1932 door J. Röntgen sr. veelvuldig gebruikt om in te componeren.
Omschrijving
Achter villa Gaudeamus op vierkante plattegrond gebouwd tuinhuis. Het huisje heeft één bouwlaag en wordt gedekt door een gewolfd bitumen zadeldak. Het afgewolfde deel, dat tot aan de voet van de schoorsteen op het dak reikt loopt in noordelijke richting schuin naar beneden. In het plat is een dakvenster aangebracht.
De gevels van het huisje bestaan uit een gemetselde plint, waarboven horizontaal aangebrachte rabatdelen zijn gezet. In de zuidgevel zijn boven de vensterreeks verticale rabatdelen bevestigd. De noordgevel heeft een in het midden geplaatste houten deur onder eenvoudig houten luifel op schoren. De zuidgevel heeft een liggende vensterreeks met vier ramen. In het midden van de gevel onderbreekt een rookkanaal deze reeks die zich met een raam in de zijgevels omhoekt en daar het tot halverwege de begane grond doorgetrokken dakschild afsnijdt.
Waardering
Het tuinhuis is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde als `componeerhuisje' voor J. Röntgen sr. die van grote betekenis is geweest voor de ontwikkeling van de moderne Nederlandse muziek en zijn villa ("Gaudeamus") als oefenruimte en als concertpodium aan musici beschikbaar stelde. Tevens vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een tuinhuisje geïnspireerd op Noorse voorbeelden, alsmede vanwege de ensemblewaarde in relatie tot genoemde villa.

Description
Garden house built behind villa Gaudeamus on a square floor plan. The house has one storey and is covered by a curved bitumen gabled roof.
