Inleiding
TRANSFORMATORGEBOUW, in 1924 gebouwd naar ontwerp van architect G. Krop. De architect heeft zich in het ontwerp laten beïnvloeden door de Amsterdamse Schoolstijl. Het is één van de vroegste voorbeelden van dit zogenaamde paddestoeltype die nog in de provincie Utrecht bestaan. Opdrachtgever was de Provinciale Utrechtse Electriciteitsmaatschappij (PUEM). De architect heeft bij het ontwerp rekening gehouden met villawijk in Bilthoven, waarmee men met de aanleg in het begin van de jaren twintig was begonnnen. Vandaar het villa-achtige uiterlijk met ramen en daklichten die feitelijk geen functie hebben.
Omschrijving
Een evenwijdig aan de Soestdijkseweg Noord gelegen transformatorgebouw op rechthoekige plattegrond. Het huisje heeft één bouwlaag en wordt gedekt door een pannen schilddak zonder goot. De dakschilden steken over, waarbij het overstek aan de onderzijde met messing en groef delen is afgewerkt. De gevels zijn in rode baksteen opgetrokken. Het trasraam bestaat uit gemetselde banden van in tweelagen aangebrachte rode en zwarte baksteen en wordt door een rollaag in zwarte baksteen afgesloten. Onder het overstek van de dakschilden is een brede, licht uitstekende lijst van verticaal gemetselde zwarte baksteen. De ramen hebben ruitvormige roedenindeling. De gevel aan de Soestdijkseweg Noordzijde (west) heeft een in het midden geplaatste plaat stalen deur. Aan weerszijden is ter hoogte van de plint haaks een muurtje gemetseld. De banden van het trasraam lopen in de muurtjes door. Naast de deur is aan beide zijden in de gevel een geglazuurde PUEM-tegel gemetseld. De tegeltjes hebben een groene achtergrond en de in okergeel uitgevoerde letters (PUEM) zijn gevat in een rood getande, als omlijsting opgevatte `bliksemschicht', als symbool verwijzend naar elektriciteit. Boven de deur is een platte betonnen luifel aangebracht. In het dakschild is aan deze zijde een klein daklicht onder plat dakje gezet. De rechter zijgevel heeft rechts een licht risalerend geveldeel met topgevel beëindiging die door het dakschild heen steekt. De topgevel heeft een steekkap met lagere nok. In de voorsprong bevindt zich een tweede metalen deur die eveneens voorzien is van muurtjes en luifel. De top van de voorsprong, waarin een klein tweelichtsvenster is gezet, heeft vlechtingen in zwarte baksteen.
De achter- en linkergevel zijn blind.
Waardering
Het transformatorgebouw aan de Soestdijkseweg Noord is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als goed voorbeeld van een gaaf bewaard transformatorgebouw naar ontwerp van G. Krop alsmede van belang vanwege Amsterdamse Schoolstijlinvloeden en de bijzondere vormgeving. TRANSFORMER STATION, built in 1924 after a design by architect G. Krop. The architect was influenced in the design by the Amsterdam School style. Description
A transformer station situated parallel to Soestdijkseweg Noord on a rectangular ground plan. The building is of one storey and is covered by a tiled hipped roof without gutter. The roof slopes project, with the projection on the underside finished with moulded and grooved sections. The facades are built in red brick. The rat-run consists of moulded bands of red and black brick applied in two layers and is finished by a roll course in black brick. Below the projection of the roof slopes is a broad, slightly projecting course of vertically laid black brick. The windows have diamond-patterned glazing bars. The facade on the Soestdijkseweg Noord side (west) has a plate steel door placed in the centre. On either side, at plinth level, a small wall is built at right angles. The bands of the rat-run continue through the walls. Next to the door, glazed PUEM tiles are laid in the facade on both sides. The tiles have a green background and the letters (PUEM) executed in ochre yellow are set in a red toothed, 'lightning bolt' taken as a frame, as a symbol alluding to electricity. Above the door is a flat concrete canopy. In the roof slope on this side a small roof light under a flat roof light is set. The right side facade has on the right a slightly projecting facade section with spire gable termination that projects through the roof slope. The spire gable has a catslide roof with lower ridge. In the projection is a second metal door which is likewise provided with walls and canopy. The top of the projection, in which a small two-light window is set, has weaving in black brick.
The rear and left facades are blank.
Valuation
The transformer station on Soestdijkseweg Noord is of general interest on account of its architectural-historical value as a good example of a well-preserved transformer station designed by G. Krop as well as of interest on account of Amsterdam School style influences and distinctive design. Also on account of its cultural-historical value as part of the early twentieth-century development of electricity supply in the province of Utrecht.
