Omschrijving
Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Introduction
The so-called 'Welkoop building' is located on the east side of the Stationsstraat, at the corner of a strip of land between the Kanaalstraat and the no longer existing Smidsweg. The building was constructed in 1922 as a MILL with SHOP AND OFFICES commissioned by the Coöperatieve Landbouwers Handelsvereeniging according to a design by Apeldoorn architect A.H. Wegerif Gzn (1888-1963). The construction of the building is entirely of reinforced concrete and provided with a shell of brickwork which 'serves only as a closing wall'. An attempt was made with this shell to 'give expression to the purpose of the building, as this consists of shop, offices and work floor ..... The rounded corners, which increase the impression of sturdy solidity, arise from the terrain form'. The external form of the rear building was constructed as closely as possible around the technical installation. This resulted partly in a sloping roof plane, although the municipality advocated for a flat roof. The influence of the Amsterdam School is clearly evident in the architecture. In the other buildings designed by A. Wegerif, this stylistic influence is far less evident. The building therefore occupies a unique place within the oeuvre of this architect in Apeldoorn. After the building lost its function as a Welkoop branch in 1992, it did not immediately receive a new purpose and after a considerable period of vacancy was squatted.
Description
The building, constructed of concrete and clad with brickwork in English bond, was built on a composite ground plan and consists of a trapezoidal building section of two storeys on the Stationsstraat in which the shop and office spaces were located. The rear building has a rectangular ground plan and contains two storeys above a cellar, the upper storey of which is occupied by broad silos. Between the front and rear building is a tall narrow building section that projects above the other parts and in which a row of tall narrow silos is located. Except for one small component, the building has a flat roof.
The symmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE contains on the ground floor six coupled windows with concrete mullions, undercill and projecting corbel. The windows have lower frames behind boarding and 24-light steel fanlights with two reinforced vertical glazing bars. Above the six-light a continuous concrete band. The first floor has four coupled round-arch windows with concrete mullions, undercill and projecting corbel. The windows have 24-light steel lower frames, partly opening, and half-round 3-light steel fanlights. Around the fanlights a band of ornamental brickwork. The rounded left corner contains a porch between rounded projecting cheeks with the entrance to the former shop, consisting of a wooden frame with termination in parabolic arch form above two shoulders. The door has been removed but is preserved. Above the porch a concrete canopy as part of the continuous concrete band. The rounded right corner likewise contains a porch between rounded projecting cheeks with the entrance to the offices and the monumental staircase to the first floor, consisting of a wooden frame with wooden door and a multi-light fanlight with steel glazing bars above a far projecting corbel. The door has wrought-iron hinges with long blades on the door that end in the form of a caparisoned horse. The facade is concluded with a concrete edge above a band of ornamental brickwork.
The front facade of the taller intermediate section has between two concrete bands a row of bricked-up windows.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE contains in the bevelled part at the location of the front building on the ground floor a large window with concrete mullions, undercill and projecting corbel. The window has lower frames behind boarding and a 40-light steel fanlight with four reinforced vertical glazing bars. Above the window a continuous concrete band. The first floor has a three-light with concrete mullions, undercill and projecting corbel. The left and right window have an 8-light frame, the middle window a 40-light steel lower frame, partly opening, and a half-round 3-light steel fanlight. Around the fanlight a band of ornamental brickwork. This part of the facade is concluded with a concrete edge above a band of ornamental brickwork.
The facade at the location of the rear building contains a loading platform with a sliding door. Above the platform across the full width of the facade a concrete canopy. Above the canopy across two-thirds of the facade a band with eight 9-light steel windows with concrete mullions between them. The windows are relieved by a stone relieving arch. The facade is concluded with a concrete band.
The left side facade of the roof structure consists of ornamental brickwork in block bond of two bricks each with in it a door with 4-light glass panel.
The REAR FACADE contains across two-thirds of the facade a loading platform with two sliding doors. Above the platform across the full width of the facade a concrete canopy. Above the canopy across the full width of the facade a band with eighteen 9-light steel windows with concrete mullions between them. The windows are relieved by a stone relieving arch. The facade is concluded with a concrete band.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE of the front building contains on the ground floor on the right a small three-light with 2-light steel frames with concrete mullions between them. The first floor has at the far right a tall 10-light steel window and under the roof edge a five-light with multi-light steel frames including a circular glazing bar. The five-light has concrete mullions and a brick undercill. This part of the facade is concluded with a concrete edge above a band of ornamental brickwork.
The rear building has on the left on the ground floor a platform with on the left a door. On the right a pair of steel windows on the left of a buttress and to the right of it a set of four steel windows. The corbel of the far left window is formed by the concrete canopy above the platform. The windows have a 12-light lower frame and a 9-light upper frame, except the two right windows. These windows have a 9-light lower frame due to the placement of a small extension on the right corner. The first floor has in the middle an 18-light steel window and in the roof structure twice a horizontal band with 4-light steel windows between concrete mullions. The lower band has five windows, the upper, just under the roof edge, four. The facade is concluded with a concrete band.
The intermediate section has on the first floor an 18-light steel window and has above at the facade between two concrete bands a row of 4-light steel windows.
The interior is still largely intact and contains in addition to among others the silos a multicoloured tile floor at the location of the toilet space.
Valuation
Former COOPERATIVE BUILDING from 1922 by A.H. Wegerif with influences from the architecture of the Amsterdam School.
- Of architectural-historical value as a well and faithfully preserved example of a cooperative mill of which the architectural details were influenced by the Amsterdam School style. The building stands out for high-quality aesthetic qualities, such as the design of the main forms and within that of the windows, the door sections, the door hardware and the ornamental brickwork. Due to the former function there is also a question of a typological and a certain rarity value. The building forms an important link within the oeuvre of A.H. Wegerif, who was here particularly influenced by the architecture of the Amsterdam School.
- Of urban-planning value due to the current prominent location at the corner of the Stationsstraat and the Kanaalstraat, with architecture adapted to the original situation with rounded corners.
- Of cultural-historical value as an example of a social development. The building was constructed as a mill with shop and offices for the Coöperatieve Handelsvereeniging in Apeldoorn in a period in which multiple cooperatives were formed and similar buildings were erected.
