Inleiding
Rij van tien geschakelde WOONHUIZEN gebouwd in 1898 in door Heroriëntatie bepaalde stijl met invloeden van onder meer chaletstijl, naar een ontwerp van P.J. Houtzagers in opdracht van de Stichting Woonhuizen Levens-verzekeringmaatschappij "De Utrecht". Panden met voortuin met ijzeren hek tussen gemetselde kolommen. De huizen behoren samen met de panden Ramstraat 2-16 en Emmalaan 1-41 tot de parkaanleg aan de Emmelaan ontworpen door H. Loran.
Omschrijving
De geschakelde woonhuizen vertonen in plattegrond een naar de uiteinden toe steeds meer teruggerooide positionering. Ze zijn in baksteen opgetrokken, hebben afwisselend twee of drie bouwlagen. In het in hoogte verspringende en met verschillende daktypen uitgeruste dak komt de grilligheid terug van de dispositie en uitvoering van diverse onderdelen in de voorgevel. De gevels worden verlevendigd door in verschillende vorm uitgevoerde erkers in baksteen en hout. Opmerkelijk is voorts de veelvuldige toepassing van hout. Enige mate van symmetrie komt voor bij de woonhuizen met inpandige balkons, geklemd tussen met topgevels eindigende bouwdelen. Verder is opvallend dat maar twee huizen de vensteropeningen begane gronds getoogd worden afgesloten. Diverse gedenkstenen, ondermeer voorstellende Joris en de Draak, een Pelicaan, een in memorie gedenksteen voor S.P. ten Holt in Jugendstil en gedenksteen voor de Stichting Levensverzekeringmaatschappij Utrecht. Vensters met hardstenen lateien. Deuren met dubbel bovenlicht en hardstenen omlijsting. Panden met de voorgevel (noordgevel) gelegen aan de symmetrische parkaanleg van de Emmalaan.
Waardering
Geschakelde woonhuizen met voortuinen en hekken van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de originaliteit van het ontwerp en de uitvoering en als onderdeel van het oeuvre van architect Houtzagers.
