Waardering

Introduction

Double MANSION, built in 1871 by architect Tepe for himself and the Mengelberg family in neo-Gothic style.

Description

Double building on a rectangular ground plan with basement, two storeys and a complex of mutually intersecting tile-covered gabled roofs. Facades constructed in brick with recessed middle section and projecting building parts on either side which are closed off with stepped gables executed differently from each other. The storeys are separated by brick dentil course and plinth course respectively. The closed windows are set in a spandrel field that is terminated by various round, corbel and pointed arches. Basement with double round-arched cellar lights, in front of the basement neo-Gothic ironwork. The main entrance is situated in the middle section and has a flight of steps and a panelled door. In the left building there is a second panelled door in a pointed-arch niche. The entrance of the right building is situated at the corner beneath a pointed-arch fanlight with fork tracery. In the second storey there are amongst others in each building section a wooden bay window, two of which in the right and left building sections have a roof; the bay window in the middle section is situated above the entrance of the left building in the angle of facade and left risalit and rests on finely worked wrought-iron consoles. Furthermore neo-Gothic detailing including ornamental wall anchors, various wrought-iron elements and sculptures.

The original finish is still present in various places in the interior.

Valuation

Double mansion, of general importance because of the architectural-historical value as a good and intact example of a residential building constructed in neo-Gothic style. Also of importance as a component of the oeuvre and the special place it occupies within it, as the private residence of architect Tepe. The double building has cultural-historical value because of its former residents: A. Tepe (architect) and F.W. Mengelberg (sculptor), who were associated as important artists with the Bernulphus Guild. The guild had chosen the neo-Gothic (building) style to bring new life to ecclesiastical art. The double building provided a gathering place for many artists attracted to this Catholic guild. Of urban-planning value as a characteristic component of the buildings on the Maliebaan.
