Inleiding
In 1857 in opdracht van J.C. van Berkum ontworpen WOONHUISCOMPLEX van vijf woonhuizen aan de Catharijnekade in één opzet in neo-classicistische stijl.
N.B. Pand is in 1989 gerenoveerd waarbij het exterieur grotendeels in oorspronkelijke staat is teruggebracht.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaand onderkelderd pand op rechthoekige plattegrond van drie gepleisterde bouwlagen en schilddak met dakpannen. Langsgevel op hardstenen voet van twintig venstertraveeën aan de Catharijnekade-zijde, waarvan de middelste zes traveeën uitgevoerd zijn als hoger opgetrokken risaliet, de gevelhoeken met twee traveeën als hoger opgetrokken hoekrisaliet en de tussenliggende bouwdelen eveneens met een licht risalerend middentravee. Begane grond met gereconstrueerde ingangen in de risalieten, in oorsprong alle met houten deuren in rondboogvormige omlijsting en met bordes. Schuifvensters met roedeverdeling van zonwerend glas voorzien, dat als moderne aanpassing van ondergeschikt belang wordt aangemerkt. Tussen begane grond en verdieping brede cordonlijst. Tweede bouwlaag met schuifvensters met roedeverdeling en onder en boven de vensters opgelegde stucdecoraties, rondboogvensters in de derde bouwlaag van de risalerende delen. Vijf traveeën brede gepleisterde zijgevel aan Vredenburg met latere ingang op de beganegrond, schuifvensters op de verdiepingen, de in de risaliet geplaatste vensters in derde bouwlaag zijn rondboogvormig. De linker- en de achtergevel zijn eenvoudiger van opzet en zijn van een eenlaags aanbouw voorzien die van ondergeschikt belang is. Langs het gehele pand een kroonlijst op blokken. De hoekrisalieten hebben platte daken.

Detached undercellared building on a rectangular plan of three plastered storeys and a hipped roof with roof tiles. Long façade on a hardstone base of twenty window bays on the Catharijnekade side, of which the middle six bays are executed as a higher raised risalit, the façade corners with two bays as a higher raised corner risalit and the intermediate building sections likewise with a slightly projecting middle bay. Ground storey with reconstructed entrances in the risalits, originally all with wooden doors in round-arched surrounds and with entrance steps. Sash windows with glazing bars provided with sun-screen glass, which is regarded as a modern addition of secondary importance. Between ground storey and first storey a wide cordon cornice. Second storey with sash windows with glazing bars and above and below the windows applied stucco decorations, round-arched windows on the third storey of the projecting sections. Five bays wide plastered side façade on Vredenburg with a later entrance on the ground floor, sash windows on the upper storeys, the windows placed in the risalit on the third storey are round-arched.
