Introduction

Roman Catholic CHURCH built in 1902-1903 to the design of J.Th.J. Cuypers and J. Stuyt, named St. Antonius van Padua, situated on a trapezium-shaped square between Kanaalstraat, Abel Tasmanstraat and Pieter Bothstraat, and executed in a style with strong affinity to the Romanesque architectural style of J. Stuyt and J.Th. Cuypers, with a tower completed in 1924 and at the same time a semi-circular apse built on the north side of the transept. In 1939 the church was assigned to the Dominican fathers.

Description

Single-nave church entirely constructed in brickwork on a complex plan, covered by gabled roofs with slate, and with a tower in the northern corner of the nave and transept. On the north side of the transept the semi-circular apse from 1924. Front facade executed as a tall, austere pointed gable with plastered top, entrance located in a separate building structure placed against the facade and covered with a gabled roof. Above it a large round window, followed by a cross with a coat of arms on each side. At the same height on the corners of the facade statues of St. Antonius and St. Carolus Borromeus. Choir gable with similar arrangement, with five coupled round-arch windows below the large round window. Brick transept with small round windows, with low annexes with two smaller versions of the main entrance situated on the right side.

Tower projecting substantially above the nave with coupled round-arch-shaped sound holes at the top, and clock faces in the east and west facades under an angled hipped roof.

All facades, including those of the entrance portals, with geometric bands halfway up the facade, tile motifs along the roof edge of the church and at the bell tower.

Interior with brick cross ribs with cross-shaped motifs, executed in fair-faced brickwork. North-east wall with large round window with leaded glass depicting St. Caecilia with musical angels. All windows have stained glass panes, the earliest dating from 1934, several of which are by the hand of Willem Mengelberg.

Organ with two manuals and pedal, built by J.J. Elbertse in 1922-23.

The church pews are executed in wood with inlaid motifs. Communion benches by Jan Eloy Brom. Furthermore on the west side a wooden organ gallery and a mosaic by Fiscalini.

Antonius altar and Maria altar with copperwork by Jan Eloy Brom.

Valuation

Church of general importance for its architectural-historical value as a good example of a church building from around 1900 with well-preserved interior and exterior. Furthermore for its situational values such as its location in relation to the surroundings and the sight lines to the church.
