Inleiding
Op de overigens niet van rijkswege beschermde R.K. begraafplaats, gelegen tegen de voormalige vestingwerken aan de zuidoostelijke zijde van Grave, staat het in sobere neo-gotische stijl uitgevoerde GRAFMONUMENT uit 1885 van I.G. Le Sage ten Broek (1775-1847), een ontwerp van de Nijmeegse beeldhouwer P.A. de Leeuw. In dat jaar heeft is door een speciaal in het leven geroepen commissie een geldinzameling gehouden om, namens de Nederlandse katholieke gemeenschap, in nagedachtenis van Le Sage ten Broek, ter vervanging van het ruim 35 jaar oude, verrotte grafkruis een nieuw grafmonument te kunnen plaatsen. De sokkel van het grafteken rust op verschillende treden, bestaande uit natuurstenen en kunststenen voetplaten.
De onderste is in de loop van de twintigste eeuw vervangen, dan wel toegevoegd.
Omschrijving
Het hardstenen grafmonument bestaat uit een grafkruis met op de dwarsbalk de inscriptie: "spes mea", gesteld op een eveneens natuurstenen, gekanteelde, op voetplaten rustende sokkel met op de hoeken overhoeks geplaatste flankeerkolommetjes.
Tussen de kolommen is tegen de (westelijke) voorzijde van de sokkel een marmeren medaillon geplaatst, met in hoogreliëf het portret van de overledene. Op dezelfde plaats aan de zuidelijke, oostelijke en noordelijke zijde een marmeren plaquette met respectievelijk de inscripties: "Hulde van Ned. Katholieken / aan de nagedachtenis / van Joachim George / Lesage ten Broek / Den edelen bekeerling / den onvermoeiden strijder / den voorbeeldigen Christen / A.D. 1885", "Geb. te Groningen 27-11-1775 / In den schoot der kerk / teruggekeerd 1806 / Ridder van / 't Gouden Spoor 1840 / overl. te Grave 11-7-1847 / R.I.P." en: "'K verlang geen kost- / baar praalgesteente / geen ijdle lofspraak / op mijn graf / maar 't Kruis alleen / dat me in dit leven / de hoop op beter / leven gaf".
Waardering
Het grafmonument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de ontwikkeling van de katholieke grafcultuur, het is tevens van belang voor de geschiedenis van het katholicisme vanwege de herinnering aan een belangrijke katholieke emancipator uit de negentiende eeuw, het is van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van het grafmonument. Introduction
On the otherwise unprotected by the state R.C. burial ground, located against the former fortifications on the south-eastern side of Grave, stands the GRAVE MONUMENT executed in sober neo-gothic style from 1885 of I.G. Le Sage ten Broek (1775-1847), a design by the Nijmegen sculptor P.A. de Leeuw. In that year a special commission was established to hold a fundraising collection, on behalf of the Dutch Catholic community, in remembrance of Le Sage ten Broek, to replace the more than 35 years old, rotted grave cross with a new grave monument. The base of the grave marker rests on several steps, consisting of natural stone and artificial stone footplates.
The lowest one was replaced or added in the course of the twentieth century.
Description
The sandstone grave monument consists of a grave cross with on the cross-beam the inscription: "spes mea", placed on an equally natural stone, chamfered, on footplates resting base with at the corners diagonally placed flanking small columns.
Between the columns against the (western) front of the base a marble medallion is placed, with in high relief the portrait of the deceased. On the same place on the southern, eastern and northern side a marble plaque with respectively the inscriptions: "Tribute of Dutch Catholics / to the memory / of Joachim George / Lesage ten Broek / The noble convert / the tireless fighter / the exemplary Christian / A.D. 1885", "Born in Groningen 27-11-1775 / Into the bosom of the Church / returned 1806 / Knight of / the Golden Spur 1840 / died in Grave 11-7-1847 / R.I.P." and: "I desire no costly / ornate stone / no vain praise / on my grave / but the Cross alone / that gave me in this life / the hope of a better / life".
Valuation
The grave monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of spiritual development, in particular the development of Catholic burial culture, it is also of importance for the history of Catholicism because of the remembrance of an important Catholic emancipator from the nineteenth century, it is of importance for the typological development of the grave monument. It has art-historical importance as an example of the work of sculptor P.A. de Leeuw. It has been preserved intact and is typologically rare.
