Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The LABORATORY for X-ray examination of the sanatorium in Appelscha was realized in 1925 according to a design by O.M. Meek from Donkerbroek, whose contracting business also built it on site. It forms a component of the former people's sanatorium, whose still existing buildings are now in use as a psycho-geriatric institution. The former X-ray examination building is now in use as a training building. The original layout consisting of a control room, an examination room, an archive, a machine room, an airlock and a darkroom is no longer intact.
The people's sanatorium was founded in 1905 in Heremastate in Joure. From 1916 onwards there were already plans to relocate the sanatorium, because the building no longer met the requirements. On the State Forest Property of Appelscha, the Stichting Volkssanatorium (People's Sanatorium Foundation) acquired a site of over 70 hectares to build a new and modern people's sanatorium. In 1922 the move to the new complex actually took place, largely consisting of wooden pavilions. In 1925 the sanatorium was expanded with an X-ray laboratory. In the past, tuberculosis patients were treated according to the hygienic-dietetic method, in which the sick were placed in a specific environment under the most favourable circumstances for their recovery. Through the use of the X-ray machine (which had already been used in Joure in 1918) as an aid for diagnosis and surgical interventions, even seriously ill patients could be cured.
The X-ray laboratory lies in line with the main access road and forms a marking point within the complex. The small building received a tower with a clock mechanism with bell, so that the isolated residents of the sanatorium could "once hear a 'real' bell tower striking" [J.P. Wiersma, Friesch sanatorium te Appelscha, (1942)].
The building is connected by means of a wooden link to a concrete building in which the administration is housed; both the wooden connection and the concrete administration building fall outside the protection at national level.
Description
The X-ray department of the sanatorium has an almost square floor plan; the elevation shows a building of one storey under a hipped roof with a projecting tower, closed off by an eight-sided curved spire. The rising masonry of reddish-brown sanded brickwork, in stretcher bond with cut joint, rests on a breast wall of sintered mondstones in a mortar which is closed off by a stretcher course. The facades are divided horizontally by spared fields, which jut out at the top to the facade cornice, alternated with surfaces which are treated as pilasters with a 'foot' in which the window openings are placed; above the windows vertically laid brickwork is as in the facade cornice. The hipped roof is covered with red tiles; pironnes stand on both roof ridge corners. The overhang is carried by wave-cut blocks.
The symmetrically arranged north facade is blind. In the middle stands the projecting tower with, in a threefold recession, the entrance with double panel doors. The tower tapers twice: on the corner pilasters this is emphasized by a concrete edge. At the height of the ridge of the main volume the corner pilasters are terminated for the benefit of sound openings, the four other sides are provided with the metal clock face of the clock mechanism. In the tower hangs a bell with the inscriptions: FRYSK FOLKSSANATORIUM / STIFTE OP 'E JOUWER 5 TEN FEN 'E HJERFSTMOANNE 1905/ OERBROCHT NEI APPELSGEA 18 DEN FEN 'E RISPMOANNE 1922 // and: B. EYSBOUTS ASTEN //. The tower is enlivened by corner pilasters and by stained glass in herringbone motif: a three-light fanlight with a triangular vertical crowning with vertically laid stretchers and two more in the tower body between rollers and closed off by stretchers. The eastern and western side facades have climbing spared fields, the middle one of which is provided with stained glass. The tower is closed off by an eight-sided spire with slates in Maasland bond and crowned by a wind rose on which a weather vane with a symbolic lightning bolt stands. The facades on either side of the tower are decorated with vertical brickwork and tile tableaux, manufactured by the fa. de Porceleyne Fles from Delft, provided with inscriptions, respectively: 5 SEPTEMBER / 1910 // and: 22 SEPTEMBER / 1922 //. Yellow brickwork is incorporated in the ornamental masonry below the tableaux and in the projection of the spared fields.
In the west facade are three windows: two cross windows with four-light fanlights and a narrow H-window with two-light fanlight. The south facade has two cross windows with four-light fanlights.
The east facade has a chimney and a three-light window, the muntins of which have been removed, with fanlights.
