Inleiding

Introduction

The STATION BUILDING (third class) at Sneek was built in 1883-1884 on behalf of the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorwegmaatschappij. In 1883 Sneek and Leeuwarden were connected by a railway line of the H.I.S.M.; the line was extended to Stavoren in 1885. The State determined the location where the building would be situated. The station was built in Eclectic style, with Art Nouveau elements. In the nineteen-thirties the building was extended on both sides to enlarge the waiting rooms. The interior of the premises was substantially renovated. At the time of construction of the station, this area west of Sneek was undeveloped. The first development came as a result of the construction of the station: the present-day Stationsstraat was laid out, forming a (north-south) link between the railway and the city. At the same time as Stationsstraat, the Dr. Bouwmaweg was laid out, running in an east-west direction, parallel to the railway. The Stationsplein, located between the station building and the Stationsstraat was originally laid out differently than it is now and formed a spatial connection between station and Stationsstraat. In the centre of the square was a fairly large green space surrounded by an iron fence, with a cast-iron five-light GAS LANTERN in the middle. The interior of the station building is not considered eligible for protection owing to the substantial renovations.

Description

The STATION BUILDING consists of a central section, two storeys high with a square floor plan, and two wings with a rectangular floor plan. The central section is covered by a broken hipped roof, on which four chimneys are placed; the wings are covered by two hipped roofs. On the front roof slope of the central section is a roof dormer with a small gabled roof and bell.

The building is constructed of brown brick, the decorative façade bands are rendered in white. The corners are finished with shallow pilasters; the façades below the eaves line are finished with a continuous frieze decorated with circular elements. Windows and doors, both on the front and rear elevations, have been replaced with new ones. Most of them are in their original positions in the façades. Against the east side elevation and along the entire length of the rear elevation is a canopy that is executed in the Art Nouveau style. The cast-iron columns with Corinthian capitals support a substantial, partly renewed, wooden awning.

The GAS LANTERN is still present but has been relocated and only the lower part of it, the high basement, is original; this bears the inscription: "Pletterij/'s Gravenhage/1896". The lantern was offered to the municipal authorities by the Sneker Vereniging Floralia as an ornament for the square. The present upper part of the lantern, made by the firm Pako in Rhenen, was donated to the municipality of Sneek in 1981 by Mr. Piet Hoomans, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the firm Peha-handelsonderneming.

Valuation

The station building at Sneek from 1883, built on behalf of the H.I.S.M., is of general cultural-historical importance:

- as a distinctive expression of a socio-economic development;

- as a distinctive expression of a typological development;

- as the most important, determining factor for the expansion of the city on the north side of the city boundary;

- because of the historical, spatial relationship with the infrastructure, as a striking urban planning closure of the Stationsstraat;

- in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment;

- because of the architectural integrity of the exterior present to a reasonable extent;

- because of the original and current function;

- because of the typological and functional rarity within the provincial boundaries.
