Inleiding
De WINKEL-TABAKSFBRIEK genaamd "De Witte Os" is in 1871 door de nazaten van Douwe Egberts aangekocht. Het aangrenzende pand, tegenwoordig Midstraat 99, is het statige herenhuis dat sedert 1831 in het bezit van de familie was. In oktober 1881 woedde een hevige brand in het centrum van Joure waarbij o.a. het herenhuis, de tabakskerverij en de koffiebranderij van het bedrijf afbrandden. De winkel ondervond hierdoor ernstige schade en werd grotendeels herbouwd in 1881/1882 in Traditioneel-ambachtelijke trant.
Het gebouw, dat tegenwoordig dienst doet als museum-winkel, ligt aan de noordzijde van de Midstraat met aan de oostzijde het herenhuis waarmee het pand op de verdieping is verbonden. Achter de winkel ligt een binnenplaats die ook van uit het herenhuis te betreden is.
Omschrijving
Het pand is opgetrokken in een donkerrode baksteen onder een samengesteld dak belegd met zwarte platte Friese pan. De gevel heeft twee etalage-ven-sters met bovenlicht met daartussen, in een portiek, de toegangsdeur met bovenlicht. De portiek heeft eveneens twee etalage-vensters met een bovenlicht. De gevelsparingen worden overspannen door een steens segmentboog. Aan weerszijden van de portiek zijn gietijzeren sokkels met houten ringen aangebracht. Tegen het fries van de bakgoot is een houten plaat aangebracht met het opschrift: "tabaks fabriek" en in het midden een medaillon met strik, witte os en opschrift "de witte os".
Centraal in het dakvlak grenzend aan de Midstraat staat een dakkapel onder zadeldak met gegolfde windveer. De dakkapel heeft een licht getoogd T-venster met bovenlicht. Op de nok staat een gemetselde schoorsteen met lijst en schoorsteenplaat.
De inrichting van de winkel is grotendeels een hedendaagse kopie van een 19de-eeuws winkelinterieur. De toonbank is bijvoorbeeld niet origineel, evenals een gedeelte van de schappen. De etalagebakken met een versierde achterplaat met decoratieve opstand zijn daarentegen wel origineel. De structuur van het oude winkelpand is echter ongewijzigd gebleven, evenals het balkenplafond en de houten vloeren. De kap is recent vernieuwd.
De achtergevel heeft een groot lichtvenster, een deur naar de achterliggende binnenplaats en op de verdieping een venster. Op de zolder is een doorgang gecreëerd naar het aangrenzende herenhuis.
Waardering
Het winkelpand "De Witte Os" te Joure is van algemeen architectuurhistorisch en cultuurhistorisch belang:
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling;

Introduction
The SHOP-TOBACCO FACTORY called "De Witte Os" was purchased in 1871 by the descendants of Douwe Egberts. The adjacent property, currently Midstraat 99, is the stately townhouse that had been in the family's possession since 1831. In October 1881 a fierce fire raged in the centre of Joure during which, among other things, the townhouse, the tobacco-processing room and the coffee roastery of the business burned down. The shop suffered serious damage as a result and was largely rebuilt in 1881/1882 in Traditional-craft style.
The building, which nowadays serves as a museum shop, is located on the north side of Midstraat with the townhouse on its east side to which the premises are connected on the upper storey. Behind the shop lies a courtyard which can also be accessed from the townhouse.
Description
The premises are constructed in dark red brick under a composite roof covered with black flat Frisian tiles. The facade has two shop windows with fanlights with, between them, in a porch, the entrance door with fanlight. The porch likewise has two shop windows with a fanlight. The facade openings are spanned by a brick segmental arch. On either side of the porch cast-iron bases with wooden rings are fitted. Against the cornice of the downpipe is a wooden board attached with the inscription: "tabaks fabriek" and in the centre a medallion with ribbon, white ox and inscription "de witte os".
Centrally in the roof slope bordering Midstraat stands a dormer window under a gabled roof with corrugated weather vane. The dormer window has a slightly arched T-window with fanlight. On the ridge stands a brick chimney with moulding and chimney base.
The interior of the shop is largely a contemporary copy of a 19th-century shop interior. The counter, for example, is not original, nor is part of the shelving. The display cases with a decorated back panel with decorative upstand are, however, original. The structure of the old shop premises has, however, remained unchanged, as have the beam ceiling and wooden floors. The roof structure was recently renewed.
The rear facade has a large light window, a door to the courtyard behind and on the upper storey a window. On the attic a passage has been created to the adjacent townhouse.
Valuation
The shop premises "De Witte Os" in Joure is of general architectural-historical and cultural-historical importance:
- as a distinctive expression of socio-economic development;
- as an essential component of a larger whole that is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance;
- because of the reasonable degree of integrity of the object.
