Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2:
- als zeldzaam en representatief voorbeeld van een midden 19de-eeuwse aanleg in landschapsstijl met behoud en integratie van oudere, formele kenmerken;
- wegens het belang van de aanleg voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse tuin- en landschapsarchitectuur;

Description
Description component 2:
HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT belonging to the country house Schatzenburg and partly situated on an excavated terp. A small-scale country house in landscape style from the 1840s, well-preserved in structure and appearance, with elements of an older formal layout that manifests itself particularly in the demarcation of the country house, the vegetable garden and orchards, the moat running along three sides of the house (north, west, south). The landscape layout came about during the occupation between 1839-1887 of Schatzenburg by Assuerus Quaestius, and shows affinity with the work of L.P. Roodbaard. The landscape layout is characterised by an open presentation at the front, parallel to the old road to Menaldum (east) with the entrance and adjoining circular route around the kidney-shaped pond, solitary trees, shrubs and a row of lime trees. In the lawn around the pond - but also elsewhere on Schatzenburg - terpen flora grows. On the north side the large orchard with an old avenue of lime trees, partly parallel to the old road to Menaldum, partly parallel to the northern part of the circular route; this orchard has a park-like layout with still recognisable course of winding paths and on the south-east side solitary trees, shrubs and pollarded maples. A wooden fence many tens of metres long closes off the orchard on the north side. On the south side between the main building and the moat with a row of poplars and a woodbank, the vegetable garden with nearby small bridge and flower beds. Directly west of the main building the small orchard with a surrounding path which is bordered by hedges on the side of the moat; this orchard was laid out in place of the auxiliary buildings demolished in 1897. Further on the west side a closed and undulating presentation of the layout in the form of Quaestius Wood, also known as Reigers Wood with a sunken pond in the shape of a tadpole and connected to the moat; this pond with park woodland lies on an excavated terp; wooden small bridge from 1986. Around the pond a walking path with at the furthest point a raised mound with panoramic views to the west over the fields. Comparable raised mounds can be found at two extreme locations in the layout, namely in the northern and south-eastern corner. A ditch surrounds the country house on the north, east and south sides.
Valuation:
The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country house Schatzenburg is of general importance:
- as a rare and representative example of a mid-19th-century layout in landscape style with preservation and integration of older, formal characteristics;
- because of the significance of the layout for the history of Dutch garden and landscape architecture;
- because of the still reasonably well-preserved structure; - because there are functional-spatial and historical relationships with the other components of the country house.
