Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 1:

Description
Description component 1:
MAIN BUILDING (Huis Schatzenburg), stands on remains of the foundation of an older predecessor and was built in 1725-1727 as a country house with a width of seven bays. The ground plan shows an L-shape and is occupied by the house with an extension built against the rear side. Master carpenter and mason Wybe Saagmans and master sculptors and stonemasons Berend Storm and Jacob Sydses Bruinsma (all from Leeuwarden), were involved in the alterations of 1724. Above the slightly projecting central risalit with soberly framed entrance a Flemish spout gable with window and crowning by sculpture flanked with vases and provided with the alliance arms of the families Huber and De Hertoghe. The house has a basement, a bel-étage and a chamber storey with truncated hipped roof on which four brick chimneys and is covered with glossy black Lucas Ijsbrand tiles. Two roof dormers are placed at the front, three at the rear.
The front gable is finished with blocked cornice between likewise blocked corner pilasters. Wide sandstone entrance stairs with vases. Porch with wind screen from 1925. To the left of the main building lies underground a rainwater cellar (1701). Externally dating from 1725 besides the sandstone pediment with alliance arms the sandstone plinth in the side gables and rear gable. Roof truss structure of the house altered in 1897 (according to inscription in roof dormer) and consisting of a pine collar-tie construction. In the north gable (right) at the extreme sides two windows one above the other, both with shutters and provided with glazing bars, the eastern one on the bel-étage with calf, the windows of the basement likewise with glazing bars. Rear or west gable with various (later added) windows (six-panes over fifteen-panes), in the corner between the house and the extension is below a toilet building an entrance from the 18th century. Layout of south or left gable partly as north gable, however with two tall sash windows on the bel-étage, below them a three-light window. Internally dates among others the monumental staircase from 1725 as well as the marble corridor floor on the bel-étage, large panelled doors on this storey, in the great hall Ionic pilasters and red marble chimney surround (around 1850) with large volutes and a chimney breast with mirror and painting on canvas (attributed to A. Otto Swalue, 1683-1768), Ionic pilasters in the salon, the kitchen with among others hearth, sink and marble counter, pump and taps, wall cabinet in the basement. A cupboard wall from the coach house (from circa 1730, demolished in 1897) stands in the attic; since the restoration (spring 1999) reused glazing bar windows are located on the bel-étage. Changes and additions took place around 1780 (among others alteration of the glazing bars of the windows, raising of the division between upper and lower windows on the bel-étage; on the bel-étage still one window with old division with calf) and in the '40s of the 19th century. Also after Schatzenburg in 1897 came into the ownership of Hospital Vredenhof, much was demolished, added and altered. The extension on the south side is a remnant of the old outbuildings from the period 1698 to 1842. The basement of the main building (north-east side) has served since 1897 as a dwelling for the house keeper and dates from shortly before 1842: a two-storey wing, two plastered gables under hipped roof, on the ridge a rider with small bell. Internally the 19th-century layout remained preserved with among others panelled doors, hearth, cupboard wall.
Valuation:
HUIS SCHATZENBURG is of general importance because:
- it has remained intact in external appearance and internal spatial arrangement, consisting among others of main layout, materials and constructive elements as well as detailing; the chimney breast and the alliance arms, both made in 1725 by Berend Storm and Jacob Sijdses Bruinsma and the kitchen in original condition from the 18th century are noteworthy in this respect; - in typological terms the monument offers a rare example of an important country house from the 18th century, being the type of a transversely placed house with Flemish gable; - in historical-stylistic context the monument forms a fascinating example of an important Frisian country house with influences from the French court from the time of Louis XIV; - the main building forms the nucleus of the old country house Schatzenburg with its garden layout and tree walk; the whole contributes greatly to the historical perceptual value.
