Inleiding
MARIAPARK, 1939, waarin een KAPEL gewijd aan Maria Koningin van de Vrede. Het park werd gebouwd voor het R.K. Kerkbestuur van Schinnen. Architect H.H.A. Tummers te Heerlen ontwierp de kapel in een traditionele stijl. Het Mariapark is gesitueerd op een met bomen beplante heuvel aan de zuidzijde van de R.K. Dionysiuskerk te Schinnen. Op de top van de heuvel bevindt zich de kapel, welke bereikbaar is via een trappartij en een rondwandeling. Aan de voet van de heuvel, aan het begin van de trappartij, een toegangsboog.
Omschrijving
De kapel heeft een in hoofdvorm rechthoekige plattegrond, waarbij het koor enigszins versmalt ten opzicht van het schip. Het schip, voorafgegaan door een tuitgevel, wordt gedekt door een achter deze tuitgevel verzonken gebroken zadeldak. Het koor heeft een torenvormige opbouw, gedekt door een ingesnoerd tentdak met kruisornament op de nok. Beide daken, alsmede de tuitgevel, worden gedekt door daktegels in Maasdekking en hebben bakgoten.
Spitsboogvormige stalen vensters met traliewerk, in het schip voorzien van recente voorstellingen in gekleurd glas (Maria met gestorven Jezus, Komst H. Geest, Maria Koningin van Vrede, Boodschap van de Engel, Jezus geboren uit Maria, Maria en Joseph vinden Jezus).
De kapel heeft een geprofileerde, geelrood genuanceerde bakstenen plint met rollaag, een optrek van gele baksteen in smal formaat en ongeglazuurde rode dorpels. Metselwerk in Vlaams verband. Consoles, sluitstenen en torenhoeken in mergel.
De tuitGEVEL aan de voorzijde, aan weerszijden uitlopend in steunberen, heeft schouderstukken op consoles en een spitsboogvormige toegangsopening met strek, rollaag en sluitsteen. Aan de binnenzijden van deze boog twee vernieuwde gevelstenen, waarop links de tekst "dignare regina pacis enixe Aueri Schinnensis Hilares gratosque templi hujus benefactores", rechts "in festo sanctie Joseph vovit me tutoque posuit Joseph Packbier, Decanus Schinnensis". De toegangsboog wordt afgesloten door een tweedelig smeedijzeren toegangshek. In de topgevel een spitsboognis met smeedwerk, voorzien van een duif en het opschrift "vrede".
In beide zijgevels van het schip drie spitsboogvensters met sluitsteen, in de zijgevels van het koor twee. De achtergevel van het koor is blind. Bloktanddecoraties in de kroonlijsten van de zijgevels van het schip en in de toren. Aan de voet van de helling, aan het begin van de trappartij, een gesmede spits toelopende TOEGANGSBOOG met het opschrift "Mariapark", uitlopend in een bekroonde ster en rustend op natuurstenen basementen. De trappen worden geflankeerd door natuurstenen keermuren.
In het INTERIEUR van de kapel rood betegelde vensterbanken en vloeren; wanden van geel schoon metselwerk in smal formaat baksteen, in Vlaams verband, met open voegen en bloktanddecoraties. Op het koor, voorzien van een hardstenen traptrede, een hardstenen altaar, waarop een Mariabeeld. Hierboven het opschrift "Ave Maria". Schip en koor worden gescheiden door een spitsboogvormige scheiboog.
In het schip staan twee rijen met vijf houten banken.
Waardering
Het Mariapark is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de maatschappelijke onrust ten gevolge van in 1939 toenemende oorlogsdreiging en als uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling.
De architectuurhistorische waarden worden in hoofdzaak bepaald door de esthetische kwaliteit van de kapel en de materiaaltoepassing. Het Mariapark heeft historisch-religieuze betekenis als uitdrukking van devotie, hetgeen mede de hoge, afgezonderde ligging verklaart.
Het geheel is in aanzienlijke mate gaaf bewaard gebleven en bezit vanwege de specifieke verschijningsvorm een in regionaal opzicht redelijke zeldzaamheidswaarde.

In the INTERIOR of the chapel red tiled window sills and floors; walls of yellow fair-faced brickwork in narrow format brick, in Flemish bond, with open joints and block-tooth decorations.
