Omschrijving
Inleiding
Voormalige KAPELANIE annex KOSTERSWONING, 1904.
Twee vernieuwde nokschoorstenen. De voorgevel is opgetrokken in machinaal gevormde grauwe baksteen, de zij- en achtergevels in ruwe handvormsteen. Metselwerk in kruisverband. Gesneden voegwerk. Gestucte plint, venster- en deurlijsten. Hardstenen traptreden.

Description
Introduction
Former CHAPLAINCY with SEXTON'S DWELLING, 1904. Built in a traditional architectural style influenced by Eclecticism, commissioned by the R.K. Church Council of the H. Dionysius, after a design by architect Pijls of Schinnen. The residential building is situated on a sloping plot on the south side of the church hill, running lengthwise along the road that circles the churchyard wall. EXCLUDED from protection are the storage shed built against the western side gable, as well as the veranda built on the terrace and the stable against the eastern side gable.
Description
The building has a basement, two storeys plus an attic on a mainly rectangular ground plan. The whole is covered by a gabled roof with half-round pantiles. Profiled wooden gutters on brackets. Two renewed ridge chimneys. The front facade is constructed in machine-formed grey brick, the side and rear facades in rough hand-formed brick. Brickwork in cross bond. Tooled mortar joints. Plastered plinth, window and door mouldings. Hardstone steps.
Symmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE with five window bays. The symmetry is emphasised by a central projection ending in a shoulder gable, corner mouldings and a cornice with mouse-tooth ornaments. In the side bays the building has in each case a segment-arched basement window with grillwork, above which on each storey a rectangular wooden T-window. The frames of the casements are provided with blockwork ornaments, a central mullion with flutes ending in an Ionic capital. The window mouldings are executed in plaster, on the first storey and the central bay of the second storey with a plastered cavetto; on the second storey the continuous sills form a drip moulding, with decorative plasterwork or consoles under the sub-sills. The central projection has on the first storey a richly decorated rectangular wooden panelled door with fanlight, in front of which three hardstone steps. This authentic door is set back in a plastered moulding with architrave and decorative pediment. On the second storey a rectangular wooden T-window in a plaster moulding with cavetto. In the shoulder gable an oeil de boeuf window in plaster moulding, a plastered drip moulding, cappings of the shoulder pieces, wrought-iron weathervane. On the front facade side a short porch with decorative yellow tiles, two corner bollards.
The western SIDE FACADE with built-on storage shed has a slightly profiled plinth, corner mouldings ending in a frieze band, and ornamental wall anchors. Chimney flue. At the height of the second storey a centrally placed segment-arched wooden corridor window with roller shutter. In the gable a round attic opening.
The eastern SIDE FACADE also has corner mouldings, a frieze band, a round attic opening and ornamental wall anchors. In the central bay of the first storey, concealed by the built-on veranda, a rectangular wooden panelled door. Above this, on the second storey, the segment-arched wooden T-window of the staircase.
Of the REAR FACADE, owing to the slope of the plot, the basement is also visible. In the basement a wooden door with segment-arched roller shutter, the second door moulding is bricked up. The facade has in the storeys respectively three and four window bays. The windows, renewed with preservation of the original casement form, are placed in simple plaster mouldings. On the first storey a segment-arched wooden T-window, a bricked-up window moulding and a triple segment-arched wooden window with ornamented mullions, fanlights offset in height and roller shutter. Beside this large window a subsequently added side light. On the second storey a series of four segment-arched wooden T-windows. Shank anchors.
On the west side next to the building stands a considerable, plastered GATE PIER.
The arrangement of the INTERIOR is characterised by a central corridor behind the main entrance, across which the staircase is projected. On the second storey a central corridor parallel to the road. Otherwise the arrangement has been adapted at a number of points. The rear room on the ground floor has been split into a kitchen and a guest room. The living room arranged on the second storey no longer has an arrangement with en-suite rooms. Living and sitting rooms on the ground floor are still separated by sliding doors. Due to mine damage, softboard ceilings have been installed in some rooms. At the top of the stairs in the corridor of the second storey a draught door has been placed.
In this interior are notably the sitting room with stucco ornament, cove cornice and marble fireplace mantel; the wooden panelled ceiling in the consulting room on the ground floor, to the right of the central corridor; the marble windowsills; the panelled doors in mouldings; the corridor arch on stucco consoles in the staircase; the staircase; the brick barrel-vaulted cellars on wooden and iron profiles.
Valuation
The former chaplaincy with sexton's dwelling is of cultural-historical value because of its original ecclesiastical purpose. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of the predominantly regionally known architect Pijls, the aesthetic qualities of his design and the ornamentation. The building is of significance because of its situation on a slope, where the church, rectory and churchyard have been built on top. The chaplaincy therefore has a historical-spatial relationship with the ground conditions and is of importance for the appearance of Schinnen. The building has a reasonable to high degree of architectural integrity of exterior and interior respectively and is of great importance for the visual integrity of the immediate built environment. Moreover, the chaplaincy is in regional terms a reasonably rare combination of the applied building style and the original function.
