Inleiding:
Representatief HERENHUIS in 1891 gebouwd in rijke Neo-Renaissancestijl naar ontwerp van architect T.L. Kanters.
N.B. In 1976 is het souterrain grondig verbouwd tot modern kantoor naar ontwerp van J.A.C. Molenaar. Hierbij werd bovendien de bouwlaag van het souterrain aan de achterzijde, in de lager gelegen polder, van een aanbouw voorzien. Het trappehuis, van de begane grond naar het souterrain, werd vervangen door liften.
Omschrijving:
Herenhuis met voortuin, gelegen achter een smeedijzeren hekwerk, bestaande uit een souterrain, twee bouwlagen en een kapverdieping. De kapverdieping is voorzien van een met leien bedekt schilddak. Het risalerende rechter deel heeft een topgevel en is het rijkst gedecoreerd. Kozijnen van deuren en ramen zijn van hout. Het pand is boven een hoge plint van natuursteen en rustica pleisterwerk opgetrokken in rode baksteen met speklagen en vensteromlijstingen van natuursteen.
De ingang, boven het souterrain, is bereikbaar via een natuurstenen bordestrap, met aan weerszijden een balustrade en aan de uiteinden, op de pijlers, een gietijzeren lantaarn. De deur, met venster voorzien van gietijzeren siertraliewerk, is omlijst met een hoofdgestel met palmtakken en halfrond bovenlicht. Links van de ingang een houten, driezijdige erker met koperen koepeldak. Rechts op de begane grond in het risalende deel twee rondboogvensters met aan de onderzijde een balustrade en bovenin de halfronde omlijsting een vrouwehoofd.
De speklagen in dit deel zijn voorzien van diamantblokken.
Op de eerste verdieping, over de volle breedte van het risalerende deel, een balkon met natuurstenen balustrade rustend op drie met leeuwenkoppen gedecoreerde natuurstenen consoles. Op de pijlers van de balustrade siervazen in Empirestijl. De lijst van het balkon loopt door in cordonlijst tussen de verdiepingen. Op de eerste verdieping vier T-vensters met horizontale vensterbekroning en rollagen met afwisselend baksteen en natuursteen. Links, boven de erker een klein drie-zijdig balkon met gietijzeren balkonhek in Jugendstil-trant. In het muurvlak tussen de vensters een natuurstenen cartouche met wapenschild.
Langs het dak loopt een gedecoreerde daklijst rustend op natuurstenen consoles, die in het risalerende deel voorzien zijn vrouwekoppen, voorts hier op de tussenliggende panelen bloemmotieven in Lodewijk XV-stijl.
Op de kapverdieping rechts een halsgevel met een tweelichtvenster, een hoofdgestel en fronton met uitgespaard timpaan, klauwstukken en obelisken aan weerszijden van het risalerende bouwdeel en boven in de topgevel. Links en rechts van het frontonbasement een siervaas.
Geheel links een aedicula-vormig dakkapelletje met rechthoekig venster. Bovenlangs het dak een geprofileerde houten daklijst. Het pand heeft een sobere achtergevel afgesloten door een mezzanino onder een laag timpaan.
Het pand heeft een bijzonder fraai interieur dat vrijwel geheel is teruggebracht in de oorspronkelijke staat. Van bijzonder belang zijn, op de begane grond: het monumentale marmeren voorportaal, de ruime representatieve hal met marmeren lambrizering en Neo-Barokke marmeren deuromlijstingen. In de zeer rijk vormgegeven directiekamer en suite, rechts van de hal aan de voorzijde: de eikehouten lambrizering, de natuurstenen schouw, het stucplafond, en de parketvloer.
In de achterkamer het stucplafond met decoraties in Empirestijl en de fraaie Neo-Barokke kasten. In de tuinkamer, links achter, een fraai cassettenplafond. Het representatieve trappenhuis is open en grotendeels uitgevoerd in eikehout met in de trapleuning gietijzeren kruldecoraties. Op de eerste verdieping bevindt zich in de westelijke hoek aan de achterzijde een leeszaal met een, van elders afkomstige, zeventiende-eeuwse (?) schouw. Voorts heeft deze ruimte fraaie eikenhouten lambrizeringen en dito cassettenplafond. Op de tweede verdieping is, in een met glas overdekte cour, het gebrandschilderde bovenlicht van het trappenhuis zichtbaar.
Waardering:
In-en uitwendig rijk gedecoreerd herenhuis uit 1891 van algemeen belang vanwege cultuur- en architectuurhistorische en beeldbepalende waarde aan het Westplein, alsook van belang binnen het oeuvre van architect T.L. Kanters.

Description:
Mansion with front garden, situated behind wrought-iron fencing, consisting of a basement, two storeys and an attic storey. The attic storey is fitted with a hipped roof covered with slate. The projecting right section has a stepped gable and is the most richly decorated. Door and window frames are of wood. The building is erected above a high plinth of natural stone and rusticated plasterwork in red brick with ashlar bands and window surrounds of natural stone.
The entrance, above the basement, is accessible via a natural stone flight of steps, with balustrades on either side and at the ends, on the pillars, a cast-iron lantern. The door, with window provided with cast-iron ornamental ironwork, is framed with an architrave decorated with palm fronds and a semicircular fanlight. To the left of the entrance a wooden three-sided bay with copper dome. On the right of the ground floor in the projecting section two round-arched windows with at the bottom a balustrade and at the top the semicircular surround a female head.
The ashlar bands in this section are provided with diamond blocks.
On the first floor, across the full width of the projecting section, a balcony with natural stone balustrade resting on three natural stone consoles decorated with lion heads. On the pillars of the balustrade ornamental vases in Empire style. The moulding of the balcony continues as a string course between the storeys. On the first floor four T-windows with horizontal window cornice and roller blinds with alternating brick and natural stone. To the left, above the bay a small three-sided balcony with cast-iron balcony railing in Art Nouveau style. In the wall plane between the windows a natural stone cartouche with coat of arms.
Along the roof runs a decorated cornice resting on natural stone consoles, which in the projecting section are provided with female heads, furthermore here on the intermediate panels flower motifs in Louis XV style.
On the attic storey on the right a neck gable with a two-light window, an architrave and pediment with open tympanum, scroll brackets and obelisks on either side of the projecting building section and above in the stepped gable. To the left and right of the pediment base an ornamental vase.
Far to the left a small chapel-like roof dormer in aedicula form with rectangular window. Along the top of the roof a moulded wooden cornice. The building has a plain rear facade terminated by a mezzanine under a low pediment.
The building has a particularly fine interior that has been largely restored to its original state. Of particular importance, on the ground floor: the monumental marble entrance hall, the spacious representative hall with marble wainscoting and Neo-Baroque marble door surrounds. In the very richly appointed director's room en suite, to the right of the hall on the front side: the oak wainscoting, the natural stone fireplace, the stucco ceiling, and the parquet floor.
In the rear room the stucco ceiling with decorations in Empire style and the fine Neo-Baroque cupboards. In the garden room, left at the rear, a fine coffered ceiling. The representative staircase is open and largely executed in oak with cast-iron curled decorations in the stair rail. On the first floor in the western corner at the rear is a reading room with, originating from elsewhere, a seventeenth-century (?) fireplace. Furthermore this room has fine oak wainscoting and likewise a coffered ceiling. On the second floor, in a glass-covered courtyard, the stained glass fanlight of the staircase is visible.
Valuation:
Inside and outside richly decorated mansion from 1891 of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural value and landmark character on the Westplein, as well as important within the oeuvre of architect T.L. Kanters.
