Introduction

An ENGINEER'S DWELLING built around 1910 in a traditional building style for a mining engineer of the coal mines. The building was designed by architect ir. I.H.W. Leliman, Design Office Staatsmijnen.

The engineer's dwelling is situated detached.

Description

Large detached engineer's dwelling with rectangular ground plan in longitudinal direction. The building has two storeys with sandstone sills, brickwork in English bond with speckled courses in a somewhat lighter shade. In the front facade rectangular and segmental-arch-shaped wooden frames with fanlights with glazing bars and stile. Most frames have been replaced by thermopane. The building is covered with a hipped roof with Mulden tiles, ridge cresting and roof dormers with lean-to roof, a rainwater gutter on wooden consoles. Two chimneys. Left part of front facade projects and is crowned by a stepped gable with half-hipped roof. In the first storey front facade a triangular bay window with above it a balcony with wrought-iron balustrade, double balcony doors under a lean-to canopy on wooden consoles. In the stepped gable wooden boarding. Right part of front facade contains a wide window in the first storey and two upright T-windows in the second storey, above which a roof dormer. Left side facade ending in a stepped gable with half-hipped roof and wooden boarding. Chimney. Round-arch windows in the first storey, fanlights with glazing bars, far left a rectangular T-window, basement windows fitted with grilles and with stone lintels in sandstone. Entrance under a wooden canopy resting on a console. Rectangular wooden front door, with lattice work and sandstone sills, wrought iron. Door with access steps with two sandstone treads and wrought-iron handrail.

Rear facade has a central projection with door with access steps with four treads, window in second storey with rectangular fanlight, and window in stepped gable with round-arch-shaped fanlight. In the rear facade in the first storey a window with segmental-arch-shaped fanlight and in the second storey two windows with rectangular fanlights. Projecting facade section ending in a stepped gable with wooden boarding. On the left side of the projection an extension of one storey with lean-to roof and on the right side of the projection a larger extension of one storey with flat roof and chimney. Right side facade has a conservatory with flat roof with brick basement; formerly a balcony door above the conservatory around 1990 replaced by a wooden frame. On the left side of the conservatory in the first storey a window with round-arch-shaped fanlight.

Structure of INTERIOR virtually intact, as evidenced by the layout of hall, staircase and rooms. Authentic wooden staircase with main newel at the beginning of the stair rail with simple wood carving. This same motif recurs in door surrounds and similar details. Wooden panelled doors, and wooden sliding doors. In kitchen still authentic tilework floor and a partly wooden chimney breast. Rooms with coffered ceilings and marble fireplace surrounds.
